1292461 2012-08-03 13:20:00 Sorry Greven any PCI card i may have had is gone along with the pc, the only info i can provide is that there is a router where the satellite is which is connected to a 802.11g(2.4ghz i think) transmitter which sends to the house. is there anything i can buy which will accept an N connection from the recieving antenna and has an LAN cord output which i can just plug into the laptop? 4134me (16857)
1292462 2012-08-03 20:59:00 Ok it sounds like you have an external antenna on the roof that connected directly to a WLAN card in the old desktop.
What you could do is buy a wireless router that has removable antenna and connect the external one to that. Then you could plug in via ethernet from laptop to this router or put another basic wireless access point that will transmit the signal inside the house and connect to that wirelessly on the laptop.

1292464 2012-08-04 14:43:00 You would probably have better luck with a Ubiquiti Bullet than a consumer grade wireless router.

There will probably be a security key set up on the bridge - if you don't know that then you will need to reset the access point on the satellite end to default settings & re-configure it from scratch.

1292465 2012-08-12 03:34:00 Hi again guys,

have bought a cable to go from the receiving antenna to the aerial plug on a router but can not get a connection to the internet. Greven- you mentioned re-configuring the access point does that basically meaning the sending and receiving routers are set up differently?

They do have a different setup. Can you please find out the make & model of both the router at your house & the access point at the satellite modem?
Most wireless routers don't have the option to connect to another AP & form a bridge, but the AP may be able to connect to the router (effectively achieving the same result as long as DHCP is turned off on the router)

1292467 2012-08-12 07:16:00 Thanks Greven,

the router? between the satellite modem and the sending antenna is a micronet sp918gk v5. the router at the house is one of these:

www.gowifi.co.nz

says it can be used as a repeater is this what i need?

1292468 2012-08-13 02:46:00 I think that will work to connect you with a cable, but I'm not sure - you would just have to try it.
Setup guide: www.gowifi.co.nz
Try setting it up in bridge mode first.

You will probably not be able to connect to it through wifi because it only has one aerial which you are connecting to an external, directional (I assume) aerial.
You will still need to take your laptop out to the micronet access point & connect to the web interface to check the settings.

1292469 2012-08-13 05:06:00 Cheers Greven, will try that tomorrow and let you know how it goes. running through the ethernet cable is fine hopefully i can make it work.

Thanks,
Adam.

1292470 2012-08-18 02:08:00 Hi again guys,

Have managed to get it working! Would not have happened without your help so thank you very much. I do have one more question.. If i was to want a wireless setup would it be as simple as hooking up yet another router?

Thanks,
Adam.
