1268589 2012-04-09 01:21:00 Well done telecom and thanks for the extra BB prefect (6291)
1268590 2012-04-09 04:30:00 This seems to be the best generous offer by Telecom!

Just anxious to see how other ISPs handle this 'attack' :D

1268591 2012-04-09 06:14:00 It is only the pain associated with the email change that keeps me from changing away from Vodafone.
I've got lots of stuff that would have to be tracked down and changed before I could axe the old ihug email account, and some of it quite important, like IRD, Charities Commission, Companies Office, banks, and various companies that intermittently report on investments via that old email account. There's two accounts actually.

Frankly, I have zero confidence that in the long term Gmail or Hotmail will continue to be available (or at least for free). They are high targets for hackers, and are known to be vulnerable and insecure. Admittedly, the average ISP is probably no more secure, but due to being smaller they're a less attractive target to hackers.

I've been looking at getting a domain and associated email, but in so doing I lose every dollar I'd have saved, and also lose a layer of confidenciality between myself and the scammers out there, as my name would be associated with the domain name once registered.

Similarly, I'm not confident that any of the existing independant email hosts will continue to exist in the long term either. It's still relatively early days in an industry that has still to shake out the small players.

The ideal might be a free or cheap email forwarding service, which I haven't researched yet... but say you could have a 'virtual' email address which is permanent, which simply acts as a redirection point towards whatever current email host (ISP) I am using.
Example, the forwarding service may provide an email address like "paul123@virtual.com" and automatically redirect my mail to "paul@orcon.net.nz" or "paul@xtra.co.nz"

Changing the 'home' account when changing ISP would be as simple as reconfiguring the forwarding address at the 'virtual' server.

Anyway, the following may help explain why Vodafone is slow to come to the party... they're taking one up the pipe for Sky, and consequently cannot offer high traffic media streaming through other providers:
www.stuff.co.nz

you can already forward from Gmail to any address you wish. I use Gmail exclusively for my email and if something did happen and I lost the account for some reason it's not a big thing as my contacts are in my outlook .pst file which I can recover easily to a spreadsheet if needed. Loosing my email address is no big thing either since it's only a personal one and I could easily just start a new one email everyone and carry on

1268592 2012-04-09 06:38:00 We've had our cap increased twice...

Same, we had 20, then it went up to 30 now 60 I think....Thats in the space of about 1.5 years.

That's great

But the irony is that Megaupload disappears and Telecom up the data cap !

In many countries they do not have a data cap.

So Roll on the other Fibre cable to the USA which they are working on.

1268595 2012-04-09 10:32:00 Well, my Telecom plan rolled to it's new month today but no data allowance change :(

1268596 2012-04-09 10:43:00 Data caps are a necessary evil for places where most of their data is international. I do think that the very restrictive unmetered deals should be replaced with a blanket policy of providing unmetered data to any content cached on the ISP network, or by one of their peering partners. 1268597 2012-04-09 10:53:00 I tell you who else need to get their act together on data rates and plans. And thats the business who cater to Motels, Hotels etc. Companies such as Zenbu, SurfSpot etc. $50 for 500Mb from Zenbu and just as bad is SurfSpot at $20 for 500Mb usable within 24 hours. You greedy ripoff buggers, dunno how you sleep at nights. Iantech (16386)

Mine rolls over on the 25-26th. I wonder if it will change then, or not.
