1268012 2012-04-02 22:06:00 Ah, 'PC gone mad" - the redneck's catch-all label for something they don't agree with/understand. Used as a substitute for thought, logic or reasonability.

You will note of course that the subject has been expanded upon from a number of differing view points, If you are capable of presenting one of your own then feel free to do so, What you posted doesn't contain any thought, logic or reasonability so its a bit piss weak really.

1268013 2012-04-02 23:56:00 I'm not allowed to say "More &*%^%% Maori krap again!!!"

But it is great to know that I got your attention :) :)

1268014 2012-04-03 02:44:00 Funny how presenters can pronounce maori words 'correctly' (maori being spoken by 0.000001% of the world's population), but so many of them fail miserably when faced with Spanish (third most spoken language in tthe world) names like "Jose" (which they DON'T pronounce correctly as "Hosay")

Have to agree with Zippity - it is political correctness.

If it was just plain "correctness", then Spanish, French, Italian, German, Finnish, Russian, Chinese (and English!) etc would all be pronounced correctly too!

(Love Metla's comment too: "Because its a dead (and horrible) language that is being re-imagined by academics, At our expense. The only place it has a place is in tourism, and tourism has next to nothing to do with selling anything real. " and "Perhaps they should have written it down themselves then? Oh wait." - right on the money, as usual!)

I also found it hilarious, that the local who won the jackpot pronounced the name of his town the same way most Kiwi's would: "tee kawatta"

1268015 2012-04-03 02:58:00 I worked with a lad who was bought up in the area, In fact his family name goes back hundreds of years, He was born in a house with no power, and his family lived off what they could hunt and what they could grow. The marae was/is the center of their community, Not a flash one built with government money.

When he says place names they roll off his tongue like he was born with them (which he was) and he doesn't pronounce then anything like the news presenters, sure I can't pronounce them like he does either but I know who I would look to for the legitimate language, Not the news presenters, nor the academics. The locals.

1268016 2012-04-03 03:31:00 I’m no help, I’m still looking for “Quiti”.

No doubt about it, our News Readers are certainly masters at bastardising any language.

1268017 2012-04-03 04:30:00 On the Coast radio station the traffic report girl makes my blood boil with her pronunciation.
Especially when mentioning Taka nini she says Tark kin nini.

I used to think the Maori language was pleasant on the ear and almost musical but now it has become a little like the German language and is quite guttural.
