38739 2002-03-11 08:45:00 Hi

I just want to ask what will happen to my computer if I delete a folder(a folder of a programme that I deleted several months ago) in the Registry Editor. The Registry Editor which I get from typing 'regedit' in the Start-Run. The reason I ask this was because I heard that if you delete something from the Registry Editor your computer might crash or stuff up real bad. I'm running Win98Se.

Thanks alot

38740 2002-03-11 10:37:00 Real Bad? You can mess it up pretty bad but usually it's when your tweaking the system.

Deleting old programs shouldn't be a problem. It'll be a problem if you deleted a program that still existed but usually a reinstall of that program would get it back.

Before doing anything in the registry it is always a good idea to make a backup of it.

Instead of deleting it yourself you should look at getting a registry cleaner of some type. I've never used them I just do the manual method and have never stuffed my registry but I always keep backups handy just incase I do mess things up.

38741 2002-03-11 11:03:00 One registry cleaner is called Regclean (there are others). I've never used it and don't know where you get it but someone else may post the address or you could probably find it with a search. Guest (0)
38742 2002-03-11 11:47:00 After my earlier reply re a registry cleaner I found another relevant posting today - 'which reg cleaner best', John D. Check it out. I presume Regcleaner is what I thought was called Regclean. Guest (0)
38743 2002-03-11 22:48:00 Your presummtion is right! Difference betwen the two: RegClean; is by Microsoft and Regcleaner by Jouni ????.

I find Microsofts Regclean dodgy at times So, it may pay for yourself to view the 'undo' file it makes inside your registry. If you intend to use it alot; you may eventually find that at one point it will clean just about everything your computer has, and when you try and reverse this change, you may encounter an 'search file' or 'open with' command and can be quite difficult to get back to the undo file and put your system back to normal again.

Don't rely or try too many regcleaning programs; otherwise you will find yourself going around in circles and thus the registry becomes messy and havoc is on the rise!!!
