To prevent the automatic attempts to connect, go Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections, then click the button that says Never Dial a Connection. The reason that is happening is because a program is running that requests a connection - check your Start Up folder (Start, Programs, StartUp), or do a ctrl-alt-dlt to see what's there. If no unusual programs are apparent, take a look in your Start Up options at Start, Run, type in 'msconfig' without the quotes, then click on the Start Up tab - there you'll see a list of applications that start up automatically when you boot up. If none of the above comes up with anything, suspect a Trojan or Worm infection, in which case you'll need more help. A simple test that is 95% effective, is to close all applications and disconnect from the Net, and open a DOS window, then at the command prompt (c:\windows>) type in 'netstat -a' without the quotes. You will see a number of headings - Proto, Local Address etc - there should be nothing under them. If there are, post back here with an accurate description of what you see. |
