| 38687 | 2002-03-11 05:20:00 | Is there a simple way to partition a large disk into 2 partions without loosing data, preferably freeware? Tks | Guest (0) | ||

| 38689 | 2002-03-11 06:03:00 | there are free partioning progs around that will do what u want but they are not easy to use. i'll see if i can find the links for them. otherwise a 'trail' of partion magic might be in order. one word of warning, no partioning program is foolproff. make BACKUPS. |

You MUST READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Partitioning is a dangerous operation. You CAN LOSE EVERTING ON THE DISK. Basically, you have to defrag the disk so that *everything* is at one 'end' of the disk. Then FIPS can alter the partition table so that the section containing data is one partition. Then DOS FDISK or linux fdisk can be used to make partitions out of the rest of the disk. Any partitioning of a disk containing data is heavy voodoo. You are assumed to know what you are doing. |

I would probably find a hard disk and install temporarily, copy everything over, then FDISK the drive and put it back I assume you want to put an alternative OS on the second partition? You must have a pretty good reason. robo. |
