38945 2002-03-12 23:53:00 After experiencing hell this morning (pay roll program useless, HUGE cashbook useless, deleted desktop folder, unable to use system restore, unable to extract zipped files to do reinstall of programs etc. etc. etc)I've come to the conclusion I've got a virus.
Found 'up_libv13' - (5.18mb file) sitting in my downloads folder and can't think what it is. Is it a coincidence that today's the 13th and I'm now in shtook up to my neck?
(Hopefully will have a techie out today to sort things out before everyone's payday on Friday)
I've noticed upon connecting to the internet that a blank IE Explorer Window pops up and that also a VERY fast unpacking of something occurs (too fast to see what it is - anyone else getting this?
I haven't cried....yet!
All replies welcome

Going to the Symantec site and typing in up_libv13 brought no response.

However if it's a file that changes it's name it could still be one.

Go to: www.symantec.com

and under the Virus Definitions heading you will find the following link:

Free Online Virus and Security Check

You do have backups.... don't you?

38947 2002-03-13 22:32:00 Hi Lynne, I dont think that is a virus. A Google search gave one result, a Chinese drivers site at:
www.mydrivers.com
where up_libv132.exe could be downloaded from a page headed Mustek BearPaw, so it may be something to do with a scanner.

If young SY is around he may be able to read that page and tell us what it says.
Lets hope you soon get up and running.
Cheers

38948 2002-03-14 00:42:00 Yep - downloaded scanner driver from Mustek, so that'll be what it is! Did that a while ago 'cos the comp wasn't seeing the scanner any more.
Techie arrived - said 'No Virus!' - couldn't reinstall Windows ME, so has taken the thing away to reformat the hard drive.
Yesiree, I have backups - but at the time of writing, couldn't get the programs to install on our little IBM Aptiva running Win95 (too stressed!) Calmed down later - got things reinstalled on the older comp and am racing the clock today (will make the deadline with bells on!)
Two things I'd like to ask - the Tech guy told me that even though I was doing live updates every second day (and things DO download)the fact my version of Norton Antivirus was old meant that I wasn't protected against new viruses - Is this so?
Also - Read a bit about Panda Antivirus software (Titanium)sounds more user friendly than Norton (which is what I use)any thoughts on that?
