| 38934 | 2002-03-12 23:34:00 | I have a recurring intermittent problem with W98 startup. The system sometimes hangs at the W98 splash screen. Hitting Esc at this point clears the splash screen and reveals a blinking cursor. Nothing has any effect from this point. The system will then sometimes start in protected mode, but not always. Repeated re-boots will eventually start the machine. It can sometimes take all day! When the problem occurs, the Hard drive indicator remains lit, though there is no activity noise from the hard drive. It's driving me crazy! Someone posted a similar problem a few weeks ago, but I could find no response. Eric Foley |

Start>run> type 'msconfig' a window will come up, click on the 'start up' tab. You will be amazed how much utter rhubarb you will find here! If you cross referance this with the info at this page 'www.pacs-portal.co.uk you will no dought be able to seperate what you need with what you don't need, or perhaps what you never knew you had, and never asked for anyway. There is a good chance this will illiminate whatever might be making your system hang on startup |

In addition I would also recommend using something like Regcleaner from www.jv16.org to clean up the registry and also sometimes running the system file checker untilty (found in system information in system tools) may also help. Remember if we didn't love a challenge we'd all be using Linux. |

Click on Help from the start menu, Windows 98 Troubleshooters, Startup and Shutdown and then go through the query pages. You should be able to pinpoint which device/driver is causing the problem. Cheers, Rod. |
