| 38942 | 2002-03-12 23:26:00 | Hi gang, Ran into a bit of a prob last night, my XP's been doing a lot of 'Press R' to repair system register a lot recently so I figured it was about time I did a clean Win XP install (plus the added fact I turnt the computer off midway through a shut down purely by accident the night before). So I did the usual clean up thing and formatted the drive and tried to installed WinXP. Only prob is mid way through install it would repeatedly shut down and restart, sometimes freeze and purge or truncate most of what it had already installed and start again? I'm guessing I can get around it by installing 98 and throwing XP overtop, but I'd prefer to avoid that like the plague. As a few of you may be aware I have been overclocking the PC recently too, but I've knocked it all back to it's original settings (PIII 733), but even at original Bioss settings it's still presenting an unstable install. Any ideas gang? Cheers, Daniel |

| 38944 | 2002-03-13 23:17:00 | Thanks, I found out what it was...yay! I too thought it was the chip, but I'd changed the settings back to it's originals and even Win 98 still wouldn't install. After careful inspection of the board I found one of the transistors had it's side exposed (the plastic around it had been scraped away at the side) and touching the new heatsink (it's a little big). So I replaced the original heatsink and applied a very small amount of electrical tape to cover the transistor, and 'hey presto' Win 98 installed ok and then XP. For some reason XP wouldn't install from a clean install (it kept looking for a NTSC driver?). I'll finish it all off tonight, and hopfully be able to apply the new heatsink (Volcano 7) tonight, without scraping any more transistors. But it looks like I'm finally getting somewhere again=) Thanks again. |
