39269 2002-03-15 01:45:00 Hi dude's my friend has just purchased a Volcano Fan, and boy is it a mother of a thing. He is getting right into overclocking CPU's at the moment and this is the reason why he has that Fan. The thing is his CPU and board sit on the side, so this means this mammoth CPU has to sit on the side too. the thing is because the Fan is so bloody heavy (to have a fan to handle massive overclocking) the fan actually is pulling one side of the CPU out of the socket. Does anybody hae any ideas on what he can rig up or do apart from turning the computer on its side.

39270 2002-03-15 01:59:00 That friend would be me ;P~

But it's not pulling it out of the socket (as it's fastened down). But when I've got the PC tower on it's side she runs fine (had her clocking @ 820 last night). But when she stands upright the whole thing goes nuts and shuts down and starts up repeatedly. so the boards either slightly bent or too much pressure is being applied to one side of the CPU, leaving a gap of air on the other.

When I put the original fan in it's ok. So it looks like I'll have to build a small rig to even out or support the weight of the new fan and CPU.

Any rig ideas? (note I want to keep maximum airflow so nothing too bulky)

Cheers,

Daniel

39271 2002-03-15 04:15:00 volcanos are not heavy. sounds like a clip problem or the cpu pads have worn down. might pay to get a shim.

or get a heatsink that uses the holes iin the mobo to bolt into the case.

had the odd prob with heatsinks bending the mobo. turns out to be the cheapo cases. used a good case which supported the mobo better and all is ok.
