39212 2002-03-14 19:05:00 Hi all, Ive been given the task of gettting a friends PC running proper again,He told me he downloaded AVG antivirus program & it found & deleted 32 virus's (new record maybe?)
Anyhow the SIRCAM virus was still lurking & making it impossible to execute any programs,So I removed the last traces of it & now programs open ok.
Only problem I have now is when windows 95 is almost finished loading I get a message saying 'cannot find the file 'beneath.exe'(or one of its components).Make sure the path & filename are correct and that all the required libraries are available'.
I have looked in startup folder & autoexec.bat & msdos.sys & there is no reference to the missing file,so I'm picking the problem must be in the registry some where . If anyone can point me in the right direction it will be much appreciated :-)

Cheers Steve
PS: OS is win 95b,pentium 133mhz

39213 2002-03-14 20:32:00 Its probably launching from under the Run, Runonce or Runservices keys in the registry which you should find under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr ent version Guest (0)
39214 2002-03-14 23:38:00 Thanks John, I have had a look in the registry where you suggest & there is nothing that refers to 'beneath.exe'
I also used the search function in the registry & it came up empty handed too. :-(

cheers Steve

39215 2002-03-15 01:06:00 Hi Steve, maybe beneath.exe was corrupted by one the many viruses, and couldnt be disinfected. Maybe it's still in a quarantine somewhere or just deleted.
It's also possible that it is being called up from a .ini file on start up.
Have a look in c:\windows\win.ini
There will also be lots of other .ini files, try having a look through those.
Is there any installed program that refuses to start?

32 viruses sure is a lot, they could have done a lot of damage.

39216 2002-03-15 05:29:00 I have Win 95 on 2 drives (probably both release As) but neither is an 'absolutely everything' installation. I searched both for beneath.* and got nothing. It might be worth your having a shot at that or a few other variations of beneath.exe with wildcards in case a virus has renamed an original file.

If you have Norton Utilities you could search for beneath.exe as a text string and see if that finds anything.

39217 2002-03-15 08:41:00 Thanks for all the replies.
Terry, your suggestion to look in win.ini gave me the idea to look in all the .ini files & I found reference to 'beneath.exe' in the system.ini file :-)
I placed a semi-colon at the front of the line that refered to 'Beneath.exe' & when I rebooted the error message was gone.
everything seems to be running ok now.
Thanks again Steve
