| 39165 | 2002-03-14 10:28:00 | Hi people, Just some more question on the memory aspect which I seeked advice awhile ago while I was here. In terms of it, my machine (the one I mostly use!) has 384 MB of ram. After following some of yous instruction of going into System Monitor -yes, i've found it, made it show what I wanted. I was totally shocked! Swapfile was over 80MBs, over 100MB of locked memory and only about 244MB of allocated memory. Oh no! Thought I had 384, I'm just asking about this now because my computer has recently just started to tell me that it doesn't have enoguh to proform the operation. (I wonder how my 'old' 8MB coped!). Anyway, how do I clean out the swapfile (I won't need it will I?) Clean the locked memory so it becomes useable and get the useable physical 384MB back. My unused memory is only about 200MB which means I've used 184MB, but... how did it cope when I had 128? I believe this monitor sure has a problem! How do I find the exact amount of memory I can use (physical). By the way, it sometimes goes up to 4?? MB for a while even though I've only got 384 so there must be a problem. How do I clear the 'stuff' I don't need, e.g locked memory, swapfile (if I don't need them) etc. I want to make this computer go faster, but without overclocking!!! Please explain step by step as if I'm new,, 'cos sometimes people just yell at me and say go to google and do a search you're self while talking 'abusive'. Pleas don't tell me to go there, I've found nothing! AND I'M NOT AN ADVANCE USER even though you might think I am (hopefully not anyway!!!) Many thanks once again, PS hopefully I'll get 500 replies... (robo say: you wish!). |

From what I know the locked memory is stuff from the core operating system and programs running. You need the swap file for when you run out of memory. Go to [www.pcpitstop.com and run the test there. It will give some pointers as to what can be done to make your sytem run a bit quicker. I remember there is some tweak that can be done in a particular file that alters the way the swap file works. PC Pitstop told me what to do, I forget what it was now. JM |

Fix the swapfile to what is the big question? I have 512mb and fix it to 150mb? |

I am forming the therie that if i install windows with 64 meg and then upgrade, it lets me have all my new ram, but if i do as i did this time, and install windows with 256, it will try to have it all! Anyone got any thoughts on this therie? |
