39301 2002-03-15 10:07:00 Hi chaps,

How can I make my Genius Netscroll Mouse only scroll a few lines at a time when I use the scroll wheel?

On some webpages (like the main page of pressf1) it works fine, and only scrolls about 2 lines at a time, so I can go swoosh up and down the page, and keep my eye on the same line of text...

On other pages (like the one I'm on right now, and trademe.co.nz) it chrages up and down a whole page at a time, which makes it really difficult to see where you are, especially if all the lines are really similar...

Can I change that?

Thanks!

:)

39302 2002-03-16 02:09:00 A Good Question.

I think that Linux will produce the same code for each 'tick' of the wheel.

To display Web pages, you are interpreting HTML 'code' from the sites.

I remember that in graphics packages on mainframes (using terminals) the cursor keys moved the crosshairs by a certain amount. If you held <shift> down the crosshairs moved faster. <Ctrl> made it faster. It would be interesting (if not useful) to know if this happens in Linux. You might speed up this way, but not slow down, which is what you want.

I am on a machine with a Microsoft Wheel mouse, but the wheel doesn't do *anything*. That's uncomplicated, and consistent. It's a 'NCD Thin Star powered with Windows CE', which talks to the NT proxy Server.

Perhaps you could stroke the mouse wheel with Robo's sledgehammer. That *would* slow it down.

39303 2002-03-16 04:02:00 Hi,

Holding down <ctrl> does make it speed up. Holding down Shift does nothing...

I've perused the code of this webpage's main page, (one that moves slowly), and that of trademe.co.nz, (one that moes fast), and there is nothing in either that I think would affect how the mouse behaved.

One thing of interest though, is that PCW's page has a table, and my mouse moves down one row at a time.

Trademe on the other hand, does not.

Perhaps the mouse is interpreting each row as a new page? When I try it on other pages, it moves a whole page less a single line.

My mouse is installed as a Standard PS2 Wheel mouse, perhaps changing it to a specific brand (or even a Genius one, if it's there) would help...

I'll give that a go, thanks for your help.

:)
