39259 2002-03-14 23:44:00 I have two computers on a cross over network, one with Windows Xp and one with Windows NT 4. Their ip addresses are 100.100.100.1 and 100.100.100.2 and they are both on the same workgroup with unique names, but I still cant get a connection between them, any ideas? Guest (0)

39261 2002-03-15 11:36:00 Also... your IP addresses are in an invalid range for local networks - 100 can be used on the Net which could cause conflicts.

I use 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 which is one of the 3 valid ranges for a network. Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on all machines.

39262 2002-03-16 01:44:00 You don't tell us HOW it is not working. Ut must give you an error message.

However, I don't think that 'illegal' ip addresses are the problem. It's more likely that you cannot get the name:ip address resolutioin, because you have not got a nameserver. And the nameservers 'out there' don't know anything about your network.

Try emailing to someone@100.100.100.1 from your machine 100.100.100.2 .

Then you need to have the name resolution order changed so that your system looks up its own list ('/etc/hosts' in a Unix system) -- probably called LMHOSTS in a Window system. This has entries like'100.100.100.1 machine1.mynet' in it.
It may exist and have entries for your nameservers.

Perhaps change your ip addresses as advised, but some Windows expert will fill in the details for the hosts file.
