39341 2002-03-16 03:06:00 Hi All

Are there any video cards that can run two screens simultaneously, one of which is an analogue CRT, and the other is a digital LCD?

Reason I ask is that I have a reasonably new 15', so when I buy a new system in a couple of months, I'll get one without a screen, but I would like to treat myself eventually to an LCD, at which point it would be nice to run them together.

Thanks

John

I don't know of any cards that will run two displays at once, but you can run two video cards in the same system at once, and run both screens at the same time (either as one desktop or as two seperate desktops).

39343 2002-03-16 05:17:00 I don't know of a card like that, but I wouldn't be surprized if there is one.

You can run two monitors from one computer, by putting two video cards in the computer.

The cards can be different, and the monitors can be different.

I've done it, and it's quite interesting, but the novelty soon wore off.

Could be very handy if you work in something like Photoshop all the time, as you get a lot of desktop area to put all of the tools on.

I'm not sure if this is what you are getting at.

39344 2002-03-16 05:38:00 i don't know but maybe i'm talking out a hole in my head but didn't nvidia just introduce a thing call nview that allows you to use up to 32 moniters or something. Guest (0)
39345 2002-03-16 05:39:00 Yes John it is possible to get video cards with dual out. You can run each one at a different resolution as well usually.

Can be quite handy with Photoshop and the like. You can put all of the toolbars over to one monitor.

39346 2002-03-16 06:08:00 Thanks for the answers.

To clarify, I didn't really think about running the same application chopped in half, but rather having two different applications visible at the same time.

Not so much because I need to, but just for fun of it, since I'll have two good screens.

It never occurred to me to put two cards in - thanks for the suggestion. I suppose that would ensure that I get one optimised for digital and don't pay to much for the other that only has to do basic analog.

Cheers

39347 2002-03-16 19:33:00 There are plenty of cards that do what you want. Most of the ATI range will do exactly what you want and also have TV out - you can only use 2 of the 3 outputs at once however. Guest (0)
39348 2002-03-17 08:15:00 Try the Geforce range, they are the best cards that I have found especially to run dual monitors, but you will also want to spend a bit of money to maybe go for the 128Mb range if yoiu want to run 2 different apps, just make it run better. Titanium is a good range in the GeForce but it is expensive and you would be going up even more if you wanted dual out. Guest (0)
