| 39528 | 2002-03-17 12:15:00 | Hi, I am running XP and went to the Win update page to get the latest updates. I rebooted my machine after the installs, and now I seem to have limited functionality - can't open a lot of programs and can't connect to the internet (which normally auto detects my DSL connection after booting). It seems to have to do with a file called atl.dll. So I checked out Microsoft's website but didn't seem to have any luck in identifying the issue, except finding out what ATL was (Active Template Library). Anyway, the main error I'm getting when trying to perform operations is 'This application has failed to start because ATL.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.' If it's any help, this message has come up on the startup items for Norton Antivirus 2002, when trying to perform a task that utilises 'taskmgr.exe', and when doing anything that calls on basic system resources like 'Add / Remove Programs'. At the same time as getting the updates, I also got a trial download of Flash MX, aswell as the new Flash player of the same name. I also got a program called 'Desktop News' which brings live news feeds to my desktop. I've uninstalled the two above programs but to no avail. I am also trying to find which of the XP Hotfixes I downloaded most recently, then uninstall them. However, I have a feeling the issue doesn't lie with these Hotfixes - maybe something's been overwritten? This is the first issue I've had with XP and I'm stumped! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Chris Bryant |

| 39529 | 2002-03-17 22:10:00 | I fixed the problem in the end. As a colleague pointed out to me, there was another copy of atl.dll in the windows/system32/dllcache folder. (it's supposed to be in the system32 folder). It was as simple as just copying the file over to the system32 folder. This fixed all the issues instantly. |
