39530 2002-03-17 11:10:00 hi all. just wondering what you use to convert dvds with and what codecs/settings you use.

i made the fatel mistake of downloading a codec pack(acemcp) which promptly stuffed everything. while i was fixing it i was looking around for a better way to convert to divx5. i currently use flaskmpeg with a heap of plugins and bug fixes.

39531 2002-03-17 22:04:00 I downloaded a program called DVDeo through Morpheus - it's around 50mb, so its not your typical flask or anything.

It seems to do the job - it does everything for you (its got all the things like flask and it calls those itself). I've never ripped a whole DVD, cause I can't be bothered, but I have ripped a music video extra off a DVD and that worked very well.

39532 2002-03-18 10:48:00 Personally Im still using the 3.11 codec with the scene detection patch for my ripping.

Ive had problems running some of the newer software, so am sticking to the good old versions.

The only concession to this is SmartRipper to extract the .vob files. The selling point of this for me being that I can extract individual chapters from within a .vob file - great for when you want a specific scene without having to wait for the 1Gig file to decode.

Flask 0.594 to convert to DivX. Do this using the Low motion codec, as once the bitrate gets above about 1000Kbs, the low motion codec outperforms the fast motion codec on all movie types. Using the scene detection patch, set key scenes to every 9999 seconds and let the codec do the work for you. A huge advantage of this is that the actual avg bitrate will be fairly close to the set bitrate.

A good tip is not to use Flask for audio processing, as it tends not to handle this very well. What I do, is leave it as uncompressed PCM - 187KBs.

The next step depends on the quality of sound you want. Personally I always normalise the sound, this helps to reduce the volume difference between the quietest whispers and the loudest explosions.

If you want to normalise the sound, you will have to extract the audio stream to .wav and edit it using something like CoolEdit 2000.

Otherwise, just use VirtualDub to convert the sample rate to 44KHz - I cant remember exactly why anymore, but this gives better quality sound than 48KHz, and compress the audio into MP3 format. Dont bother using anything over 96Kbs, and even 56KBs gives decent sound quality if you are stuck for disk space.

39533 2002-03-18 11:54:00 holy cow ! ! ! i got sick of doing it that way...getting the sound to sync is a sod of a job.

flask0.6 with plugins does it ok all in one go in half the time. unfortunatly setting up all the patchs, plugins and codec is a pain.

i'm still playing with the settings trying to find a good compramise on quality vers size.

what res do you convert it to?
