39936 2002-03-20 23:56:00 Hi,

Where do i get one cheap (ethernet + modem)? Have tried DSE but they dont have any. IBM has for $500 - yeah rite. The internal card for laptops...

The other thing is why has ram for laptops increased so much like 256MB used to be $50US, now is $120US (crucil.com) and NZL has relatively stayed the same.

Suggestions would be helpful.

39937 2002-03-21 03:58:00 This won't be helpful. ;<) .

When you buy a laptop, they get a good handful of your delicate anatomical bits.

Memory is often 'special' so it costs more. PC Card modems and Ethernet cards are 'essential' because you haven't got standard slots, so they are expensive.

Batteries are 'special' and expensive.

You get to pay through the nose. Fun, isn't it?

39938 2002-03-21 10:08:00 Hi,

Memory prices are being fixed left right and centre...There is little hope I'm afraid.

It should almost certainly be possible to get a Modem + Ethernet Card for a laptop for less than $500... My Dad got such a device about a year ago for $200 & something, and it was an ISDN capable modem too.

Agreed latop components are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but $500 is daylight robbery (DSE is good at that), have a crack at emailing the likes of tastech@xtra.co.nz to see what they can do. Tastech is generally known as the best parts supplier in the land, so if he can't help you out, I think you're screwed!
