2002-03-23 02:42:00 | I intend to buy a new laptop. Do any of you know of a Make/Model out there that can be upgraded without the need of a technician. (I have built my desktop myself and upgraded RAM, HDD etc). I know that the best option is to buy hardware in excess of my needs but I am trying to save money and adding bits on at a later date is an option I would like to have. Cheers guys

2002-03-23 07:31:00 | Most laptops these days have the ability to upgrade CPU, RAM and Hard Drive. The only manufacturer that I know that makes this fairly easy is Asus. The offer a product that has upgrade specifications. EG thermal disapation and if you want to get a new CPU you have to make sure it meats this level. | Guest (0) | |
2002-03-23 23:22:00 | Hi! I have had a laptop since 1996 to date I have had 1X Toshiba, 3X IBM. Don't just look at upgradability. There are other measures such as, size of keyboard, size, weight, screen size, resolution, ram expansion. It ultimately depends on ur use. I doh play games thus I have a IBM X20, without battery less than 2kg - 1 inch thick 12 inch screen XGA 32bit colour. Drawback is one PC Card, ram to 320MB,CPU not chanegeable. Generally ur use will dictate ur buyings. Portable ones tend to be restricted. Bigger ones more stuff, heavier ie. has wireless lan, IR, LAN, modem, firewire, tv out, video in, 2 PC Card. Summary go with ur needs and mybe the dimensions will influence ur choice. Look closely at RAM expansion, PC card not that much since we now have integrated lan/modem on most and the use of USB (USB version 2 is avail on PC Card) USB is great with capturing (video), ethernet, wireless lan, IR, modem, ADSL, CDRW/DVD (USB ver. 2) CPU - in my opinion even if upgradable its minimal since they are unable to go from P3 to P4 but can do ie 600-800 etc etc. Also look for graphics I have only 4MB (bought last yr) ok for work too flimsy for games .. so u may look at this area. Also portables some have CD/floppy externally or on docking station.

2002-03-23 23:31:00 | Hi again! After mentioning so much peripherals on USB ... u can buy a USB Hub ...... Also the CPU issue upgradability for minor changes are existent for v few laptops. Manufacture will make a killing so really doh bother ... last time seen minor upgrades for $800NZ+. If i were u i just sell it and buy new laptop. If its not upgradable some do it buy purchasing a another full motherboard which has the CPU soldered on it and have the other components on it ... ie lan, modem, video ......... list goes on. Literally u are changing the whole guts of the laptop and keeping the shell. I have not tried this. I have seen these on sale from ebay and trademe but they tend to be surplus outdated stock by the time u may not wish to upgrade anyway ... like P2-400 (most flash) to most so so (P2-233). RC

2002-03-23 23:35:00 | rams no prob easier than desktop. open with one screw then insert module in diagonal and press down! Really is this easy under 5mins!!! HD again under 4mins!! take one scew off slide away. Get new HD and push in - replace cover and scew. Many ones u would need to fit HD onto a try b4 pushing it in .... Other thing is if u invest in a full docking station (not a port replicator or base unit) normally u have a half-length PCI card avail to you. And IBM seems to support 3DFx ... not too sure check it out. Under their support page i think, RC
