40164 2002-03-22 15:46:00 Hi ya all,

About 2 weeks ago, I replaced ME with XP Pro and everything has been going fine: until tonight. I noticed 2 problems that advice would be appreciated for.

1. I was doing my weekly cleanup and when I went to do the defrag, I got this message: 'Snap-in failed to initialize. Name: Disk Defragmenter.CLSID:{43668E21-2636- 11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}'

How do I initialize the snap-in?

2. Went to do a search and got this message: 'A file that is required to run Search Companion can not be found. You may need to run setup.'

What happened there?

Is there a repair function for XP, or do I have to do a reinstal?

Thanks.

Have a look at the above link, there are several links on the first page, a couple are from the MS DataBase, etc. I did not have time to explore in too much detail, the answers appear to refer to win2000 but there might be something in there for you to follow up on

40167 2002-03-22 22:28:00 Graeme, there is a repair facility in XP if the other solutions don't work. Put your CD in and the setup thing should launch, run through that until you get to a point where you decide whether to repair your installation or install fresh. I think it works in Windows, or you might need to boot from the CD and run it from there. I've never used the repair function, so I don't know what damage it might do to files already on your system. 40168 2002-03-25 11:14:00 The MS support article.

On your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, when you click Start , and then click Search , you may receive the following error message:

A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup.
As a result, you cannot start Search Companion.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur there are files missing from your installation of Windows XP, or if some Windows XP files are damaged.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use the following procedure.

NOTE: You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group in order to perform this procedure.

Click Start , click Run , and then type the following command:

%systemroot% \inf
Click OK to open the INF folder.

Locate the file Srchasst.inf .

Right-click the file, and then click Install . This will reinstall the files that Search needs to proceed normally.

NOTE: In some cases, when you disconnect from the Internet, the problem may occur again, even if it was previously fixed. This is the result of Internet filtering software on the client's network or the user's ISP redirector. You can view the files in question (open them in Microsoft Notepad, not Microsoft Internet Explorer) to determine the source of corruption.
