| 40231 | 2002-03-23 13:32:00 | I have a 1991 data general acermate computer 466d dx2. 66mz, 24mb ram, = gb hard disk, ktx-56k12-g modem, running Windows 95. I use it for the net and e-mailing but it?s just so slow. Can I upgrade it? I am on a very tight budget so I have been looking through the secondhand ads. Motherboard: Pentium 850mhz or Duron 900mhz. @$100 each Ram: upgrade to 64mb Modem: not sure Would this work? Can I carry out these upgrades myself? What would you recommend remembering that I will be looking for all my parts secondhand? I just want it to perform on the Internet at a decent speed. Any advice would be extremely gratefully received. |

I don't know what mhz number that is with penitums but i know you can get an AMD K2 500mhz into an AT case. A board and chip at that rating would be around $200 on the second hand market i reckon. It would most likely have integrated graphics as well | Guest (0) | ||

Granted I blew the chip when I was upgrading it, but that was due to my poor tech skills all them years ago by putting the chip back in without a heatsink...ack! But you could try clocking the 66 to a 100 for that little extra burst of Mhz. Just check your boards jumper settings and Bioss to see if you can (but you should be ble to, and it won't cost you a thing either). Best of luck, Daniel |

It doubles the bus clock from 33 MHz. You won't be able to run the bus at 50MHz. 25MHz yes, that's how DX250s worked. But the DX4-100 trebled the bus clock (that's why they called it the DX4!) from 33Mhz. If you could find the faster (83MHz) Pentium OverDrive, that would make it go faster. I've only been able to find the 63MHz one, and that's a bit slow because it runs the ISA bus at 25MHz. Most of the 'modern' motherboards need an ATX power supply. You've got an AT supply. It's not just a different plug. You will probably be better off looking for a complete 'obsolete' box. a 200 or 300 MHz Pentium would probably be noticably faster. |
