1293375 2012-08-07 00:09:00 Hi All. Maryann's PC is playing up.
On startup all we get is the lights on the black tin box, mouse light, monitor power on. No lights on keyboard. Every few seconds there is a single "Beep? from the tin box.
I have checked all the connections & all ok.
It is a Metla Assembly from 2004 using new & used parts at that time.
Ram has been increased over the years as has the hard drive. Dont know the age of the HD.
Nothing comes up on the screen

OK

Tell me the worst!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thaanks. PJ

1293376 2012-08-07 00:30:00 www.computerhope.com One beep ...RAM failure ???? according to this link.......wait until others reply though PJ otherwise it would be the blind leading the blond lol :) smurf (6545)
1293377 2012-08-07 05:05:00 The beep may give the clue but you need to know what BIOS you have and then try to figure out what it is indicating.
This site;
pcsupport.about.com
Lists some of the award codes and what they mean, see if any of them sound like the beeping you are hearing.

It's really difficult to diagnose this sort of thing remotely, and Ideally it's best to have parts you can swap around which most home users don't have.
You could try removing and reinstalling the RAM or graphics card, sometimes the slots degrade over time and the connections can be improved by plugging them in and out. Other than that you really need parts you can swap to try and diagnose whats going on, and considering the vintage that could be tricky.

1293378 2012-08-07 05:49:00 Remove RAM modules one at a time and see if removing one (or other) cures it.
If not, could be VGA, if not that, well.....it's usually bad news.

1293379 2012-08-07 07:18:00 Thanks all, so far. Will check Ram seating & Processor fan tomorrow in daylight.
We have NO parts that we can interchange to faultfind. Should the above not fix the problem...then the Black Tin Box is going in thr wheelie bin. PJ

1293381 2012-08-07 08:45:00 No, no! Not the wheelie bin! I think I'm a confirmed hoarder and if you were somewhere near North Shore I'd be saying bring it round and I'll have a look, try some of my 'spare' ram, hard drives, etc. Sadly you're too far away.

P.S. I don't suppose you're driving up this way anytime soon? If so bring the black tin box with you!

Far,far too far for us to drive from Wanganui these days. Both in our mid 70s & too frail. Will look around for a cheap or free second hand one. PJ

1293384 2012-08-07 09:35:00 HI METLA, lad. Maryann here! Until the past few days, my 'Metla Marvel' computer hasn't missed a beat and I've used it for HOURS...done masses of photo editing on it, created Scrapbooks for 3 family members etc etc! I've even had heated conversations with it,:badpc: and it's always forgiven me. We'll try what's been suggested, tomorrow. We won't be giving up on it too quickly. Failing all else, black armbands will be worn, flowers placed on the desk top and a period of intense mourning will follow! Poppa John (284)
