Map wars in the future?

Microsoft's purchase of AOL patents may be about a Google map war

By Larry Dignan | April 9, 2012, 6:22am PDT

Summary: If you connect the dots AOL’s patent sale to Microsoft may have a lot to do with the Bing Maps, Mapquest, OpenStreetMap trio vs. Google Maps.

Microsoft bought AOL’s patents in a deal valued at $1.056 billion and may have just accelerated a Web map war with Google.

In a statement, AOL said it will sell more than 800 of its patents and patent applications to Microsoft. The deal includes shares of an undisclosed subsidiary so AOL can take a loss for tax purposes.

The deal is good for both parties and the patent auction was apparently competitive, according to Microsoft.

Why would these patents be so hot? There’s a Web mapping war going on

1269205 2012-04-11 00:12:00 Seems about patent portfolios wars for safeguearding or owning intellectual properties for large online enterprises or behemoths. Including the recent 1 billion purchase of Instagram by Facebook, and Google's 12 billion Motorola deal. Seems to be out gunning one another, as announcements made recently and almost simultaneously. kahawai chaser (3545)
1269206 2012-04-11 01:45:00 I'm missing something here -- it seems if M$ is a Johnny-come-lately to the patents that were either leased out or sold to another company before M$ acquires them - isn't that some sorta ex-post-facto situation?

At least Google should be grandfathered our of the legalities that would make them exempt of any litigious actions .
