1270505 2012-04-18 21:00:00 I miss the good old days when machines could run windows with 128MB RAM quite happily ... Now you need 3/4 of a gig just to install / start it up :p

On a more serious note, Microsoft seem to have a bit of "hit n miss" with their OS.
Win 98 = Sucess
Win ME = Flop
Win XP = Success (We skip 2K coz it wasn't overly consumer targeted, more enterprise)
Win Vista = Flop
Win 7 = Success
Win 8 = ??

:D

1270506 2012-04-18 21:32:00 Windows 98 = Flop, Windows 98 SE = Sucess

Windows Server & Desktop OS's are pretty joint at the hip since 2003/XP I would say, not the other way around.

Server 2003 was based on the same kernel as XP, Server 2008 with Vista and Server 2008 R2 based on 7.

I went to an MS Boot camp a little while ago, it looks like they are doing a huge push with Hyper-V improvement with Server 8. I'm a VMware fan my self but with the price of ESX now days I can see Server 8 being a hit as a hyper visor.

I stand corrected ;)

Yeah I've tried ESX as well as ESXi (Their vMotion is MEAN!), Hyper-V and a few others... Definitely liked ESXi the most and Hyper-V the least :-/

Win 8 = ??I predict a flop because the majority aren't going to like not having the old Start Menu. It's just too much of a radical change for the average desktop user and will be less productive for them. I just can't understand why MS seems to have such a thing against the menu as to me they are very efficient. Drove me mad when MS brought in the Personalized menus as you never quite knew where a menu item would be so I turned it off on any machine I touched as it only confused most users. The same went for hiding file extensions of known file types. The answer to a problem that wasn't.

1270509 2012-04-19 02:02:00 I predict flop.
They still arnt listening to what people want : re the default menu.
This will raise alot of interest & free publicity, most of which will be -ve

Business's will just skip this & wait for the next version of Win: as they did with Vista
Joe Office Worker actually want familiarity. They dont want to learn how to drive a new OS
The number of complaints I hear just with the small learning curve after upgrading to Office 2010 proves this.
Joe Public actually want the OS to be faster & easier to use: after they soon realize 'window dressing' & flashy widgets doesnt make the PC/OS any better ( this is what happened with Vista )

More & more home users are seriously considering a Mac when they get a new PC/lappy , these are customers that MS will NEVER get back.

1270510 2012-04-19 03:10:00 Windows 7 will be the next xp and 95, it will be around for years. Windows 8 is good except the lack of the start menu. I like it faster boot times. But I think the metro integration is clumsy and poor. That should change in the next version though. But if it is going to compete with ios, it need to be updated very regularly as technology changes quickly. Windows however is not updated anywhere near as quickly. robbyp (2751)
1270511 2012-04-19 22:55:00 I think I see what MS are trying to do with the metro panel, it looks like it could end up working quite well for for touchscreen and tablet devices. However they've got a way to go in terms of design before they'll have something that most pc users will be happy with. I personally believe they should be aiming for something closer resembling the activities overview panel in gnome 3. J_Joyce (6569)
1270512 2012-04-19 23:45:00 I see windows 8 as windows 7 SP2

watch this space tho, this is meant to be the year of the ultrabooks, there appears to be some pretty cool gear about to be released and it is designed to work with win8
