1269500 2012-04-12 09:01:00 Personally, I think even this new revised test is still too lenient. There are far too many incompetent drivers on the roads as is. inphinity (7274)
1269501 2012-04-12 10:27:00 how is it still too lenient?? GameJunkie (72)
1269502 2012-04-12 11:12:00 Before (in the old test) if you did something wrong they took you into another area and did the same sort of thing again (eg moving from higher into lower speed) if you only made the mistake once you were fine.

It's not like all of us go below 50 before the sign and only accelerate after it. Not to say we deliberately ignore and break the rules but there has to be some lenience in day to day life.

I think a lot of us take for granted how it was when we first learned to drive and forget that we were all probably pretty terrible. I'm sure a lot of you can relate to this my dad's story of his first drive, he got sick of his impatient brother teaching him so bought a Morris in wellington, "learned" by driving around scotts, paid his $15 or what ever it was for a license and drove up to waikanae early in the morning to avoid traffic lights and hill starts. We are never perfect when learning. Any one who thinks they are thinks far to highly of themselves

1269503 2012-04-12 20:57:00 I thought you had 250m AFTER a sign to get down to that speed, and I'm pretty sure it was a cop who told me that too.

I have no trouble with the new test rules though, if anything they could still be tougher on some things, there are still far too many muppets on the roads.

1269504 2012-04-12 21:36:00 Bottom line: its a TEST
Its not a rubber stamp pass. Dont complain if you make a mistake & fail.

If everyone was forced to resit there lic every 5 years, I bet that would make a big diff to the poor state of NZ drivers .

1269505 2012-04-12 21:56:00 How can you argue with something that is clearly outlined on the front of the piece of paper you have to sign and agree to before siting the test?
It says you instantly fail if you speed.
You are sitting your restricted its a 30minute test. All you have to do is be on your best behavior for 30minutes, its that easy. 30minutes then you get the next year to do what ever you like.
It says in the book you must be at or under the speed when you hit the sign, i mean its why they get you go through those zones, going from 50 to 70 to 100 and back again.
I sat my restricted 5 years ago now and it was still like this. So its not just this change.
Its called a speed limit.
You cant speed up before the sign cause you are still under the other rule. You can just do what ever you like before the rule change. Otherwise why would you do the speed limit anywhere else. I mean you could be heading for the motorway and know its a 100 so why not just accelerate now from your house cause you know you'll get to the 100km/h sign sometime soon.
Come on these are basics in the Driving test book.

1269507 2012-04-21 00:53:00 A mate of mine just failed her restricted, the ONLY thing she did wrong was going past the 50km sign in masterton at 55 as she was slowing down.
What sort of rip off crap is that? one thing and it wasn't major. And it wasn't even sustained speeding, she was slowing down.

As far as I can see NZTA's system is a rip off designed to get them more cash with a test thats impossible to pass on the 1st time. I have heard people say before it's designed to make you fail the first time or even the 2-3rd time, I thought that was just bad drivers having a rant but this shocks me. I feel it's quite clear the system is ripping off the people who pay through the nose to use it.

All this stuff about the tests making the roads safer is all a load of **** too. I have had more close calls with adult drivers making dangerous passes between the hutt and masterton it's not even funny. The "kids" as we are labeled tend to be more alert and focused than the hurried responsible "adults" who over take overtaking cars in the right hand lane. I feel more safe in a car with a person on their restricted because they are paying attention to whats going on. Adults are all over the place (not all but quite a few). And for what ever reason are not aware of their surroundings.

pfft failed because of 55 after passing a 50

/rant

Failure to observe the current speedlimit and think far ahead enough to be able to drive within the posted speedlimit. Even when I passed my driving test over 20 years ago now that was a failure!

I openly admit to failing my first driving test due to an error resulting from changed lane priorities on a route I had been practicing for months previously. Unlike the UK we do not have the option of advanced driving organisations which are far tougher on driving standards than the basic driving tests, over here the advanced driver is racing around a race track! NZ driving testing needed a radical overhaul to make them tougher but the failure to observe the speedlimit sign is not a recent change.
