1294013 2012-08-13 00:51:00 I have Lubuntu 12.04 (alternate) installed on a p3 with 500mb ram.
It's very slow but I am using that to experiment with.
Having to put in the password to make changes is a pain, cant figure out how to get rid of that.

1294014 2012-08-13 04:45:00 I've got 13 installed persistently on a flash drive, it's pretty neat to play around with. Had bad experiences with 12 trying to get it set up on sister's old laptop, java caused pretty major issues trying to update the damn thing.

But it seems 13's really pulled together quite well.

This is how you should be running any OS (Linux or MS Windows). Running everything from a privileged login is not wise.

After initially installing a Linux or any OS, I will disconnect from the net and log in as root then set everything up as I want it as I find it so much easier than going through a hundred requests for permission and you can't do that with Ubuntu. After that it is very rare that I ever log in as root and never while connected.

The SUDO thing is an Ubuntu-verse thing. Try OpenSUSE, the administration GUI in it is excellent and the reason I have stuck with it for years.

PM me an addy if you wish and I'll send you the latest DVD, 64 bit and 32 bit, one each side and multiple desktop choices out of the box. On older gear I use LXDE but there is also Windowmaker and XFCE as well

Cheers
