| 1270087 | 2012-04-15 11:13:00 | WalOne, when I flew out of Memphis which is the hub for Fedex it was not unusual for a heavy to be held down after liftoff while another went over the top from a crossing runway. Once even took off on 18 while a 747 was landing 36. Tower say "Clear for take-off immediate left turn please contact departure through 1000ft" Bit over the top (so to speak) for me ... I'm not sure I'd be too happy about that arrangement! Did you ever transit the VFR lane along the beach at LAX and have the taking off aircraft pass underneath you? Yup, from memory the corridor had a 2500ft base. But several times I requested (and got) clearance to overfly at 1000ft along Sepulveda Blvd. One highlight was taking my CFI visiting from NZPP for a joy ride. Most impressed was he, it vindicated his faith in me to a large extent. New Zealand is so far from real aviation. Some of those things would really give the cub reporter some thing to write about if he could stop his hand from shaking from fear. You are so right! When I was based in Texas, I used to borrow a mate's aircraft based at Twin Oaks Aircraft Park. It's located only 2nm from San Antonio Intl, and nestled in between the two main runways at 90 degrees to each other. Circuit height was 600ft QFE. Uphill only for landings, downhill for takeoffs, and do a couple of steep turns to avoid one of the Oak trees ... |

Neighbourhood airports such as these are common in the US, one of the reasons general aviation is so big. It's user friendly (i.e. pilot friendly) and not overly regulated as we are here. As an ex instructor though I hate to see pilots fiddling with things in the cockpit while still on the runway unless it is necessary which it seldom is. Too may times the gear is retracted instead of the flaps. Hate seeing the wheel go forward on touch down on a Cessna. Adds a lot more wear and tear on the nose gear. |
