1269489 2012-04-12 04:23:00 A mate of mine just failed her restricted, the ONLY thing she did wrong was going past the 50km sign in masterton at 55 as she was slowing down.
If you are prepared to break the speed limit when sitting your license what will you do at other times is probably their line of thought and probably quite right too. It didn't really matter that she was slowing down.
In Canada when I was there they used to have a warning sign before the speed limit sign so you had no excuses.

They do that at some places here too.
One I can think of is coming into Kaiwaka, heading north, you get a yellow sign saying 70KM/H area 400M or something along those lines.

You're joking of course.
Restricted.
55kph - slowing down....

Right.

1269492 2012-04-12 04:35:00 They used to have a limit on meters on when they could ping you before or after the signs. Cant remember what it was but they got rid of it IIRC Gobe1 (6290)

Right.
You forgot the obligatory Tui sign.

1269494 2012-04-12 04:49:00 I just got a speed camera fine the other day for doing 55 in a 50kph area. Cost me $30.
:(

1269495 2012-04-12 04:53:00 Exactly so I have to wait until I've reach the sign to change to the new posted speed limit.
Therefore when coming to a slower limit I should be able to wait until I reach the sign before starting to slow down just as I have to wait until I reach the sign before speeding up.

No, when coming up to a slower limit, you must be at or under this limit when you reach the sign.

Case in point. If you do something during a test that you can be fined for, that's an immediate fail.

1269497 2012-04-12 05:20:00 I've always wondered about this and if that's the case then I have to speed up before I reach the sign when going from a 50k area into a 70k or more area.
That way I am travelling at the correct speed when I pass the sign.
But what happens if a cop sees me doing this and pings me for speeding while still in the 50k area?
They can't have it both ways can they?
Don't be a dipstick.

1269498 2012-04-12 05:24:00 When you have a driving test you have to pay strict attention to the letter of the law, they can't and won't let anything slide. Think of the speed sign between different limits as a border - on one side of it you are allowed to do 70, on the other side 50. On neither side are you allowed to exceed the posted limit in anticipation of crossing the imaginary line. Yes this means you have to slow down below 70 before reaching the 50 km/hsign, and can't accelerate above 50km/h while still in the 50 km/h zone.

there is a whole list of things that are automatic fails, speeding is one of them. Pcuser42 probably had it right, I've never thought of it from the fine angle but I know things like;
Speeding
Any contact with another vehicle
Failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign
Failing to indicate
Crossing the centre line (including when turning into a side street)

Are all immediate fails, I suppose technically they could even issue you a ticket for it so just feel lucky all that happens is you fail the test.

What annoyed me is a friend who failed the test 100M from the police station for cutting the first corner, fair enough he failed but the officer told him to drive around the block and stopped the test. He'd paid for a full test and he should have got it, and feedback on how he did for the rest of it. Stopping the test is overly harsh in my opinion.
