40380 2002-03-25 05:06:00 I have a problem with the lack of connection speed when connected to my ISP (Clear.net). I have a Dell P4 1.8 Ghz with Connexant V90 HCF 56 K modem. Windows XP. I was unable to get a reliable connection to the net. Only 1 in 10 attempts were successful. I contacted Clear who told me to put the following string into the advanced settings of the modem - +MS=V34,1. This solved the connection problem but now the fastest I can get is 33.6 kb. The line is of good quality so I don't know why I cannot get a faster, reliable connection without the string. I understand that the string is resticting the speed. Is there another one that would allow me to use the speed of the modem? I have the latest driver loaded.

Thanks

Nigel

40381 2002-03-25 05:54:00 That string is setting the modem to the V34 standard. That is 33600 bps.

Your modem is capable of V90 -- 56k down, 33.6k up. Except that your modem and Clear's modem don't seem to be able to negotiate any good speed if they assume that your end is V90.

You may have too many devices on the phone line. Have you got the 'modern' 2-wire phone wiring? The 3-wire system gave trouble when fast modems came along?

40382 2002-03-26 03:40:00 Hi Nigel,

Delete +MS=V34,1 and type S11=250 in the extra setting box.

Hope this speeds up your connection. Cheers

40383 2002-03-26 09:48:00 Thanks Amelia. I have replaced the string as suggested and connected at 44 kbps first time. Guest (0)
