| 41112 | 2002-03-31 08:35:00 | I have spent the last two days trying to construct a 'family' webpage, mainly for my far-flung children (now adults) to see family photos. I have used a free programme (HTML-Kit) to make the programme (complete with family photos. The final result looks fine, and works off the floppy with the files on it. However, when I try to upload the files to www.tbns.net (another freebie recommended by F1, I find that: 1. The photos don't print (I get the file name, but no photo) and 2. only the first page loads, the others seem to get stuck on various adverts, not available notices......This must seem a simple problem, but I am tearing my hair out, and I only got involved in this because the weather is so lousy we can't go sailing! | 41113 | 2002-03-31 09:16:00 | The photos aren't displaying because the webpage is pointing to the wrong folder where the images are. Firstly see if the images folder is in the same folder as they are on your floppy, or try the link below for a detailed explaination. As for the 'free' webpage site with ads etc which isn't working properly - find another if you aren't happy, there are lots to choose from these days. www.pagetutor.com |

| 41114 | 2002-03-31 09:20:00 | If the photos don't show there could be so many reasons why.. Here was the reason why it didn't work when i made my first webpage using front-page. The files were referanced from my machine, ie: on the index page, the photo that i want is at C\my-machines-harddrive\the-right-folder\pic1.jpg or whatever, which is all well and good, untill it is uploaded, and the webpage is veiwed, and the veiwers machine tries to find it's images at C\my-machines-harddrive\the-right-folder\pic1.jpg which has no relevance anymore. The solution was to edit the html document in say notepad. If you remove the 'C\my-machines-harddrive\the-right-folder\' bit leaving just <img src='pic1.jpg'> AND you insure that 'pic1.jpg' is in the same folder as the rest of the document it will work. I have never used this programme, and there may be an easyer way of doing this without editing in notepad, but this will work, if this is indeed the same problem. Do you have the site up somewhere? If so posting the adress here would mean that we could look into the script and perhaps see why it doesn't work! |

| 41115 | 2002-03-31 10:30:00 | Chris and John are spot on with their solutions and hopefully you can understand what they are saying. What I would like to say is that I have tried the program HTML Kit and didn't find it as easy to use as 1stPage2000, which I prefer. It is on one of the recent PCW disks (March?), although I got it off the web a long time ago. Inserting graphics is a real breeze with this program - just drag and drop and the links always stay correct. Just thought you'd like to know. |

| 41117 | 2002-03-31 22:22:00 | I just had a look at your page. I then went to 'private.tbns.net which is a picture of a yaught. Susan is definatly right, the problem is that the image names are in lower case, but you refer to them on the index page as 'Manapouri1-2002.jpg' etc. Your images are on the server, and it is just one letter that you will have to change to make them visable. One of the annoying things about computers is that often good grammer is simply a mistake, atleast when it comes to file names. I have been playing with websites for a few years now, and sometimes still have to slap myself on the wrist for putting a capital in front of a file name. It does make a difference, and in the name of funtional consistancy i now ensure everything is in lower case! I wish that i had had pressf1 when i was starting out. The simplist and most obvious mistakes were seemingly impossable to spot, untill someone pointed them out. These days or course i dont make simple mistakes.. just huge ones. I am so glad that the pressf1 community is now here to help. ----Chris. |
