41176 2002-04-01 10:38:00 Earnie, surely you mean 48.0kbs not 4.8kbs.

If my ISP's started droping to 4.8kbs connection speed, I'd soon drop them.

And yes, the modems I use at home, and in computers I build up for friends, usually have internal Lucent win modems, or perhaps I should say, Lucent chips and drivers. $45.00 plus GST new.

We all hook up at Min 48.0kbs, and we all use World-net. Then again we are all in Auckland city. (I'm talking 8-10 different computers here)

As long as the cpu is 166mhz or bigger, then internal or external modem makes no noticable difference to cpu speed.

I also now use Clear.net as well, since Zfree went belly up, as my sons hog the World-net connection so much, up to 14hrs per day in the weekends and holidays. Clear.net works great

This is just an interim thing, as I plan to get Jetstart with a router eventually, when I can afford it, and feel sure that it will work ok. Judging by the comments here about Jetstart, I might be better to stay the way I am for a while.

As far as I can see, anybody in Auckland city who has a 56k modem, and hooks up at less than 48.0kbs, has either configured their settings wrong, installed the wrong driver---or is using a lousy ISP. (I believe some phone lines can give problems, but I have yet to come across this)

I'm a fussy little bugger, when it comes to building up computer for a friend or family. I always recommend and install Win98, (invaribly the computers are buit up from second hand parts) then I set up the internet connection.
At this point if everything is working correctly, ie nothing wrong in device manager, no clashing irq's, definately no dos drivers, and another good indication that things are running sweetly, is a fast shut down. I then defrag. Then I upgrade IE to whatever is the latest ver. (currently 6.0) but only after getting the default ver. working first. Then defrag again.

And so it goes on, add Acrobat and Winzip, and defrag again. Add Office 97 (usually only Word) turn off fastfind straight away, and defrag again.

I always try to use PS2 mice, and not serial, most of them have no sound cards. They are not games machines, forget about playing games on anything less than 200mmx, and even that would only be old stuff.

These are internet cruisers, and word processors, the total cost of the hardware is never over $200.00 (thanks to other friends, computer flea markets and trademe)

It's all just a hobby for me, and if I see a blue screen of death, then I have done something wrong, sometimes It's fixed in a few minutes, and sometimes it can take a frustrating week. I guess that's the reward, the answer is always there, it's just being persistent enough to find it.

Some simple rules:

If your old 133 is running Win95, don't try and upgrade to W2k. try to use the operating system that's the same age as your computer.

Whatever the min ram is for your operating system, double it.

HDD's under about 4.0gb, always leave 10% free for system to operate.

If you want to go fast, turn off all the bells and whistles.

Defrag reguarly, whether it says it needs it or not. I'm always amazed when I see someones computer with 10 programs running in the startup, last scandisk, and defrag 486 days ago. Jeez thats like running your car for 5 yrs without an oil change.

If you are using an OS prior to W2k, then you are going to have to reformat and reinstall at least once a year, to clean out the glut, and get some speed back. So always backup the things you will need, because it may come before you are ready for it.

Try to save drivers you download, it's real handy when that day does come.

Well I've got to get back to the 286, running Windows 1.04. Does anyone know if it can run Win3.1, or am I trying to jump to far ahead?

Really these tests only begin to have meaning if they are done many times at different times of the day, week day, week-end etc. That way you would begin to get a picture and at least some statistics could be performed.
Have fun:)
