41513 2002-04-03 00:58:00 I've heard of a much-used library CD-ROM (perhaps with cracks around the spindle hole) which disintegrated inside the computer's CD-ROM drive, rendering it useless.

Anone else had this happen? I'd think that most games only require 4x speed, which would not give enough rotational energy?

Could this be a risk with cracked DVD video discs used in a PC as well?

But the bits could not hit anything breakable in the drive. They might jam the tray mechanism.

I've heard that putting CDs in the microwave oven gets exciting results.

41515 2002-04-03 03:25:00 My flimsy CDs use to crack in my 52x Drive.

None of those CDs use to explode nor did it get as far as to make a long crack to the outer edge of the CD, probably because by then I discontinued using those CDs because they weren't reading correctly.

Even the slightest cracks can cause the CD not to read properly.

41516 2002-04-03 05:46:00 well it has happened. maximumPC mag had a few readers write in about there cds 'blowing up' inside the drive. small crack+ heat+ high rotational speed cd drive ment cd flew to bits destroying the drive.

i would hate to have the drive around head height :(

41517 2002-04-03 06:27:00 A few years ago I hired a game from blockbuster video in Christchurch.
While installing the game the cd cracked straight down the middle, upon returning it i explained what had happened.

A few days later I got a very nasty phone call from the manager saying that I had broken the game though mistreatment, once again I explained what had happened, but he did not believe me saying that 'cd's don't just crack like that, you must of stood on it or something'.

Well, after refusing to hand over any money to replace the game I got taken to the disputes tribunal and of course lost because no one believed me that a cd would explode in a drive like that.

To put this in perspective this game was about 3 years old, and was very popular. Just think how many people had hired that game over a 3 year period, that would equate to many, many, man years of use.

So yes cd's explode! but it ain't any fun when you have to foot the bill when they do.

41518 2002-04-05 00:27:00 That game must have paid for itself many times over and it was 2nd hand you should only have hadf to pay $20 or so like insurance co do when they depreciate the value of your car on a annual basis . Guest (0)
