41488 2002-04-02 22:00:00 My machine has two HD drives (C:, D:) and was until recently dual booting (Win 98 on C: (primary), Win 2000 D:). C: was the original drive and D: (and 2000) was installed later. The dual booting is through the 2000 boot loader.

The C: drive has now died (invalid media type error). I suspect its software related - nortons has recovered plenty but I can no longer boot (the boot loader was on c:) and need to know what to do next?

I can read both drives and see data on both (D: is perfectly intact and backups C: (and vice verca)). I am happy to reinstall 98 on C: ... but wonder how to get 2000 back again (without reinstalling --- ie get the boot loader to load 2000 and, when reinstalled, 98). Also, while I am at it, I wonder if I should make my new D: drive the primary and C: the slave ... or is this just making things more complicated than needs be.

My hardware is 3 years old and I assume perfectly fine. I need 98 because my printer has no drivers for 2000 and it works(ed) just fine.

This is my first post - spurred on by this latest crises and the magazines recent F1 article.

Look forward to your response.

41489 2002-04-03 03:27:00 I think you are in for a long session. I had a similar problem, and ended up reinstalling everything. I now keep a ghost image of my whole HDD, so that I never have to go through it again.

If you reinstall 98, like you say the boot loader will be gone.

After you have reinstalled it, you could try W2k repair of the CD. I didn't have any luck with it though. This is where your problem will be, no way to boot up W2k.

Unless there is a command you can type in dos, while you are in D: that will boot the system up, I think you just had to type 'Win' to get 98 to go. I don't know for W2k, maybe someone else knows.

Whatever happens let us know for future use. I spent a lot of time searching the net for a solution, and all I could find was a lot of sites telling how to install a dual boot system with W2k, but none on how to remove a dual boot.

In the end I dropped 98 and went with just W2k, fresh install. You obiviously can't because of your printer drivers.

Good luck

41490 2002-04-03 03:50:00 Thanks for that :-(. There is hope I think ... Will try to boot to the 2000 CD ROM and do a manual repair (Boot Sector).

From what I have read this should reinstate the boot sector of the primary drive - but then again, it may not. I would be astonished if I cannot salvage my D: drive ... but stranger things have happened!

Thanks again.
