| 41940 | 2002-04-05 02:05:00 | Cost savings are minimal to be honest, as far as I'm aware unless you 'know people' who can supply you with parts at wholesale cost you'll not save that much. You'll need: A case - easy, try cash converters Motherboard - best to go to a company like ETC or aquire direct, check PC World mag for ads. Some motherboards are sold with processors. CPU, RAM - both widely available, shop around for prices. Check especially the trade & exchange as you can be ripped off seriously by bigger companies in regards to RAM. Stuff like CD drives and the like again I'd check publications like the T&E, but try to avoid the big mainstream shops (you know the ones I mean), their mark-up should be illegal!! | 41942 | 2002-04-05 03:03:00 | Have to agree with Andrew on this one. I priced up a system based on a preconfigured retail model and found I could only save about $400 ie. the GST (& a bit). Mind you I dont have a wholesaler and that might add some more to the $400. In the end I valued the warranty and my time (to build it had I chosen that option) at more than $400 and went the retail way. But I did get the guy to throw in some OEM software for free, so I was more than happy. | 41943 | 2002-04-05 05:09:00 | I had a couple of systems built up using generic parts before Christmas for under 2000 each which included standard warranty on all parts, a equal system from say Harveys or Noel Leemings was going to cost 600+ more. Advantage was we got exactly what we wanted and no demo software etc and easily up gradeable as required in the future. |

What components do you already have? atx case, cdrom, floppy, etc. I've just re-built/upgraded for $424-. This was for new (on special): Soltek 75kav-x mother board $187-, AMD Duron CPU $135- incl heatsink & fan. 2nd hand: Leadtek Geforce 2 pro 64MB video card $150-, 52x cdrom $52-. All incl GST. You should be able to pick up a new 20GB HDD for about $185-200-. The rest of the bits & pieces have been scavanged of various systems. I'll just keep upgrading components untill the mother board runs out of puff. I'm not buying the latest & greatest but what I believe are good quality, tried and tested parts. HTH Murray P |
