1295046 2012-08-17 03:33:00 Data recovery software often assumes the drive still works, and that the data loss was caused by software itself. Windows isn't great at handling faulty drives either.

That's why I have used Linux and dd rescue in the past, it is more tolerant of problems. Then you scan your created image with a recovery program later.

Remember, the first thing is get a copy OFF the drive, not bugger around trying to get Windows to stop crashing when trying to read it.
