1473593 2020-12-10 21:05:00 Have been watching the test against the West Indies. What a good game! But I wonder, why do all the cricketers have a number on their back? If they were playing rugby I could understand it as the number denotes their position, but in cricket there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason for it.

So why do they wear a number?:illogical

1473594 2020-12-10 21:09:00 Numbers have been worn in short format games for a considerable amount of time. While I'm not 100%, I believe this was done to make players easier to identify - especially if you're watching the game live. It's only just recently become part of test cricket though. Probably because 11 or however many tallish white guys on a field in a hat and sunglasses are pretty hard to distinguish between.

Small bugger - jersey wasn't wide enough.

that cant be right ?
if the numbers on their back, the player wont be able to see his number so how would he know what position he was
and when substitutes go on, with numbers 16, 17 , 18 etc, they must stand at the back of the field as there is no corresponding position

Is it the same for race car numbers ?
