1467183 2020-03-03 21:50:00 clicks.aweber.com A link to Leo Notenboom's latest newsletter. He is holding a live webinar to demonstrate backing up Win10 using tools built in to Windows because backing up is the area people need help with according to his survey. I wrote in an earlier post about how difficult I have found making a start backing up. He personally uses Macrium Reflect (which wanui recommended) and there are instructions on his website for making a backup image. bellbird (6169)
1467184 2020-03-03 23:12:00 Damn I knew I was going to do something LOL :D

But yes, Macrium has worked well. I used to use other software, but found it started having problems with the insider builds, where as Macrium Doesn't.

Found the article on Leo's site, basically the same thing I do,but a couple of small points he misses , one in particular if you want to recover just a few files from the backup.

What I DONT agree on is putting off the backup recovery media, if you need to use a complete backup you need the media, unless you add in the option in the boot menu. Do it NOW right after doing the image !!

Leo's video askleo.com

I'll point out the things I'm referring to shortly with some pictures, and a video on how to actually restore the image.

1467186 2020-03-04 02:43:00 You picked up my subtle reminder wainui :) Yeah just a little reminder :D ;)

I have some snapshots as well as a couple of videos, so I'll upload them later today.

1467187 2020-03-04 04:10:00 OK here's the very quick examples. In the video links if you expand them to full screen they are clearer.

In the first Video, Have already downloaded Macrium Reflect- the video shows installing the program, ( as well as viboot - See note at end) once installed Attach a External HDD to save the backup to - creating the actual backup then mounting and opening the backup. This is done to show how you can navigate to a file ( lets say you deleted by mistake) and want to get it back from the backup.

I always untick the schedule options, dont have to but I do. Of course if you want to schedule regular backups the thats a different video / Pictures.

One important part ( where Leo missed) is putting ticks in the check boxes to allow access (see pic below) - if you don't do this and have the backup opening on another Computer you will be denied access. Even though the Video shows me cutting the file its actually not cut from the backup.

As I commented Earlier MAKE A Restore Media NOW other wise it may bite you later.

This video shows several obvious options for media. The one that is highlighted allows you to have the option to boot into a rescue and restore from that, you can change the times or options in the text option.

Video Creating media streamable.com this one is NOT required ( boot menu) its only an option.

Recovery
this ones a little different. My Camera is rubbish so had to do it as if booting from a CD/ recovery options. Its exactly the same as this video EXCEPT you cant recover from a live OS, and my screen recording software wont work without a Live system. SO when it gets to the end and says it needs to boot into Windows PE thats the above boot options. The ONLY difference is when booting from a CD /USB and you delete the existing partitions theres a pop up window requiring confirmation top delete. IF you had a completely empty HDD, say a New one when selecting the drive it shows as empty. :)

Note: viboot - that's the virtual machine option to boot the backup image as a virtual machine, the Host OS Must be Professional or above, the home edition of windows doesn't have the inbuilt Hyper-V.

1467188 2020-03-04 04:29:00 Just for the hell of it, here's a complete viBoot / Virtual Machine from the image created / shown in the first Video, never been run before :)

what advantages do you see with Macrium , over the built in Windows backup : file backup + disk image option .

what advantages do you see with Macrium , over the built in Windows backup : file backup + disk image option .First things that come to mind right off the top of the head.

1. Easier to use for non technical people.

2. With the inbuilt windows, you HAVE to have a same size or larger drive than original to restore, meaning lets say you have a 500GB std Drive, theres only 100GB used, image it with windows backup, then later on try to put that image back onto a 250 SSD - wont work as the windows image will be looking for a 500GB + area and refuse to put the image back even though there's plenty of room.

3. Recovering a single file from the Macrium Image is simple as double clicking the image, weather it be on the original Computer or another (as shown in one of the videos), windows backup requires LOTS more steps and way beyond the average user capabilities.

As a example just did a backup of this PC with inbuilt windows, good luck getting a single file out from there, lets say its on the desktop ;) Also Macrium compresses a back up image, This PC: Macrium = 52GB Windows Image = 88GB.

4. One of the biggest things is you can boot from a Macrium CD / USB and make an image of the Drive, even if its not booting, had to do this many times when Windows 7 or 8 failes to boot and save all drive contents before wiping their drive and reinstall. With the inbuilt windows you need to have a fully working system first.

And as we all know, many people don't even make or think about backups till its to late or something happens. MANY people have problems with simple setting changes so getting some to actually setup a automated backup with the inbuilt "Backup Using File History" :waughh:

1467191 2020-03-05 00:47:00 I think I also had an issue with the way the windows image does a shadow copy and needs enough free space not just on the drive but also on the hidden boot partition. It can keep refusing to do a backup due to insufficient space when you know you have plenty. That was a pretty specific case though and I only ran into it once. It's also slow and I don't know about current versions but older ones would not backup to a network drive except on pro versions of windows.

I do still use the windows tool for an initial image when I first get a new PC set up though and it works very well.

But then maybe I should stay out of it :) I generally forget to back up my windows regularly and if it gets borked tend to just reinstall from scratch. I only back up my important files and not much else.

NO don't stay out of it, every ones opinion is worthwhile (with the exception of a select few, as all the comments are always negative and picking a disagreement anyway and we know who they are ;) ) .

We all forget to do backups from time to time, that's why I have set Macrium to do mine automatically every day at around 8 pm, and other backups with various programs Live - meaning make even one tiny change and zipppp backed up. Mind you with several computers doing backups at the same time the server does go on a go slow a little so I have had to stagger the times.

The Auto backups for mine (and all other computers here) are now all being done by Macrium, because the windows home server software, now obsolete is not fully compatible. ( and the hardware went bang a while back).

Here's a screen shot of my Auto Backups as an example: On Fridays every week does a complete / full backup, then nightly after that a differential, at the end of each 2 week it starts deleting the oldest, so I basically have a complete fortnight if I need it. The Arrow points the the full done last Friday.

It really is set and forget. Then once a month (as long as I remember) I copy the complete Computer backup Folder, containing all the different installs to an external Drive, some change some dont.
