1467375 2020-04-13 05:04:00 Thanks WT. I'll report back once the install has happened - 12 May in theory. Tony (4941)
1467376 2020-04-30 22:33:00 OK, good news + a couple of questions.
Good news is that the fibre is being connected today instead of 12 May.

My current router (Draytek Vigor 2760) will support fibre, but I have to reconfigure one of the LAN ports to do it. I'm currently using all four, so I seem to have three options:

Buy an unmanaged switch to give me more access
Connect my printer via USB instead of LAN
Buy a new router, presumably from my ISP - last resort, definitely

Questions:
Pros and cons of using USB instead of LAN for my printer?
Pros and cons of getting a switch, and any particular switch recommended or can I just go on price?

1467377 2020-04-30 22:51:00 I would expect your ISP to provide a suitiable router for free. I would wait for someone more expert than me for recommendations.
I did think Chorus would get on to it as soon as they could those guys like getting paid as much as anyone else :)

I'm actually waiting to hear back from my ISP. I'm not at all sure I'll get a free modem.

1467379 2020-04-30 23:13:00 I'm still waiting to be connected but my modem arrived months ago, I'm with Spark. zqwerty (97)

If USB then it's better to be connected directly to the Computer, some routers have a USB port meant for a printer but most are unstable when using it.
The printer has to have a Ethernet port if wanting to use it on a LAN, some do some dont have one.
The advantage of having a Printer on the LAN is if you have multi devices they can all print no matter what Computer is turned off, where as if you have a USB even if its shared that computer HAS to be turned on to enable printing.

Switches: Theres plenty to select from, How much do you want to Spend ??

Make sure they are a Gigabit Switch, and always better to have to many ports than not enough, the general usage come in 5,8,16 or 24 port. Then you can throw in do you want the ports to be POE ( say for connecting Security cameras that are POE powered) I personally use TP-links, never had any problems with them.

As a test I've disconnected the the ethernet and connected with USB and set it up as a shared printer, and everything works OK. The printer is permanently powered on, so that's not an issue, and if the PC is powered off then any other devices that might use the printer will almost certainly be powered off as well, so I think everything will be OK from that point of view.
The only issue I've found is that there is a web-based "Command Center RX" where you can administer the printer remotely rather than using the tiny LCD display and as far as I can see that only works via the LAN.
I only need a minimal number of ports on the switch as all I'm wanting to do is free up one port on the router. I've used TP-Link stuff before and it seems OK, so I'll probably go for that if I decide to go that way.

We soon got sick of that, that's why all our printers are networked Via Ethernet to the router.

It was a PITA :D Wanting to do 1 print, but shoot the computers not turned on Grrrrrrrr

Now its (well SWMBO anyway) Which printer did I send it to.

Had that happen the other week, while working from home she accidently sent a 40 page document to the wrong printer :groan: (instead of the one I set up on the kitchen table so she could use for her work) Told her I would have to :ban Her from accessing that networked Printer LOL -- That went down really well. :o

1467383 2020-05-01 05:07:00 I only have the one printer and usually only one PC on the go, and its only me here, so keeping track of stuff isn't a problem (usually). Tony (4941)
1467384 2020-05-01 05:08:00 Well, I'm all connected. Started about 13:15, finished at 16:05. All went very smoothly. All I have to do now is talk to Actrix about getting it activated. Tony (4941)
