2020-04-01 01:42:00 | One other thing to add, with such low specs and slow internet you need to allow 6+ hours for the upgrade from 1709-> 1903. When it starts you cant stop it, sometimes its a lot less in time but generally low spec Computers can take forever. Sometimes its actually quicker to save all the data (after imaging it with macrium, which you can use to extract the original data, but mount the image and test first) Then wipe the complete drive clean and install fresh. Had a few now, after setting going, then several hours later fails due to some reason, wiped the drive and fresh installed within 45 minutes. wainuitech hi and thanks. Her internet speed has never been as slow as it is now and has become in the past 2 weeks. It is dismal and lucky I can get some response in her computer via TeamViewer. As you mentioned creating an image of the C Drive and testing it and saving all data, then wiping the Drive and going in with Fresh instal W10 (1903 perhaps or 1909) Home x64 was something I was considering. Use Media creation tool to download the ISO for W10 Home v1903/1909 or download the OS from MS.com Directly and use that, sometime in the not too distant future. That update to W10 v1903 has probably been sitting in her Windows Updates for yonks. Why it hadn't installed I have no idea because the Active time for updates was set at 8am-17pm, daily. Most probably something to do with that SRP being either empty/corrupted or almost full. (?????) But whatever it be, I can't see me getting it updated to that v1903 that's sitting there in updates. Thanks for reply and suggestions. Always welcomed. Cheers edit: I could download the W10 Home v1903/1909, burn it too DVD or onto a bootable USB and post it to her. Take 10-14 days to get to her but there be no download/upgrade failure as could well happen using the 8Kbps down speed she presently has on Internet. When she has the Disc or USB then I can guide her about what to do. It's not too difficult to do what discussed here :D (y)

2020-04-01 02:13:00 | I seem to remember that quite a few computers were stuck on 1709 a while ago, and some were a major effort to upgrade hands on, let-alone remotely on a slow connection. hi zqwerty Thanks for that piece of info. As for the slow internet she is getting at the mo its a PITA but I can at least access her device in TeamViewer and do some checking and fact gathering. Last Year, about March April, I connected in TV and installed MS Office Pro 2019 onto her computer for her, took about 45 mins and also cleaned out the Mcaffe that had come preinstalled and installed Comodo IS 12 which she has used successfully since. Yes I know Comodo is frowned upon by many but I used it for years, upped to bought version of Eset IS and got the hump with it because it kept locking up a few game exes that had been 'patched' ... LPD ( La puta madre!) :D So a few months back I invested in Bitdefender Total Security 2020 and its fantastic. I have license for 5 devices but unfortunately cannot use one for her computer ..LPD again! :D NOR can I transfer the Eset IS i bought, cunning putas made it's License registration only usable in New Zealand. Sigh....... might get her to use Bitdefender trial when she gets some decent internet speed on her side of the Globe to download / instal it etc, but that isn't about to happen in the foreseeable future due to the Lockdown for indefinite period. Oh yeah, as for the CPU running at 80%-100%, when TeamViewer is in use, it's hogging 45% of CPU usage. Once again, thanks for your input. Much obliged. garry

2020-04-01 02:44:00 | At the end of the day, the lady of 79 years only uses her device for emailing, playing Facebook games suchlike Criminal Case, Vegamix, Crystal Island and either Slotmania or DoubleU Casino. :D No 160GB, CPU/RAM/GPU hungry Games like Far Cry 5 or Resident Evils requiring framerates of as many hundreds as ya can get for that dear :D and a bit of browsing. In the FB game, Criminal Case, it takes her 40 minutes to get one Star in a scene to use it for talking to someone or inspecting a bit of evidence...... I can log into her FB and get a star in 60 secs max. She hates Scene 6 so when that comes open I get 4 of the 5 Stars for her to use when needs be. But to help her out and ease frustration for her, I have been getting in there and getting her 4 of the 5 Stars in all scenes when they become opened, bar scene 3 which she likes. That's about it for now peeps. I'll keep checking here for new replies. Cheers

2020-04-01 03:53:00 | I decided to download the W10 using the Media Creation Tool. Decided to download .ISO, Spanish, x64. I was not given option to choose either Pro or Home as is visible in the attached pic, and I wonder about that because the Texted Guide states that I will be given the choice between the two versions. Also, there was no mention of the version of W10 that is now being downloaded. Seems to be a bit lucky dip, only way I can tell is to connect a blank, formatted HDD to my computer on its own and instal from a DVD I will burn from the downloaded .ISO to see what is made available to me. Wondering if I have to extract the .ISO to a folder and remove the ei.cfg file thus allowing a choice of W10 version to instal. Will find out soon: download is at 70% after 20 minutes. I will post back results after I have attempted instal. Hope I don't screw my Computer with MS because I chose to download the .ISO for installing to another computer.

2020-04-01 06:03:00 | Ok, I have the W10 .ISO burned to DVD and after some investigation I have Spanish language, all versions of W10 Op Sys on the DVD from which a choice can be made at Installation time for OS version desired. The version for the W10 x64 Home Single Language is 10.0.18632 which is the Version 1903 (May 2019 Update) Here are a couple pics of the 2 commands I used in CMD Prompt to gain the info about W10 OS's and version recorded to the DVD. Why it shows "Bootable: No" I have no idea. I haven't as yet tried to boot from the burned DVD but will try that shortly after the transfer of data on a 500GB SSD to and external 4TB has completed, remembering to remove ALL other NVMe SSD's and External HDDs so there is no chance of screwing them up as I have managed to do in the past by not removing them when I installed OS to an HDD and managed to Hybrid the two different MBR's! | 1467765 | 2020-04-01 06:35:00 | Although the DVD carries all versions, when you install the OS, the install selects the current operating system on the computer, ie if the computer has Home, it will up grade to Home. If it has Pro, it will upgrade to Pro. | Bryan (147) | |

If it has Pro, it will upgrade to Pro. Bryan Hi and thanks for the info. Decided to stay with W10 Home x64. Am reluctant to use the created DVD to upgrade her OS to v1903 because as it won't do so from the Windows update that is available for her and as the probable cause is a faulty/corrupted SRP that shows 260MB available space it may be best to do as wainuitech suggested and do a full Disk backup image, format the drive and fresh instal W10 x 64 Home and then have to get all the updates/'netfx/VisualC++/Service packs etc etc and reinstall her MSOffice/ AV and a few more programs that she uses... all very time consuming but if it has to be done well so be it. This was an interesting read about the "Windows 10 update v1903 failed to instal" www.wintips.org The 'Manually do the update" was informative, but on an 8Kbps internet all is rather limited. I have just finished installing the Spanish W10 Home x64 v1903 build 10.0.18632 which fired onto the 500GB Samsung Evo 860 SSD in 8 minutes as I am running AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and 16GB GSkill FlareX DDR4 at 2400Mhz,,,,, but alas, :D when it got to the Create an account with MS and I had to enter an email address I got as far as the '@' and hit a brickwall :D Tonto here had set up for Spanish keyboard and the @ is NOT where it is on my 'Gringo' keyboard! So I tried the option to enter a Phone number and that was another brickwall because Tonto had become a Payaso and doesn't remember his own new landline number! And it is saved to a Phone/Addresses notepad file on the C Drive I had removed prior to installing the W10 Home :D That was it, another 2 walls and I had no escape so I terminated the install by use of the Power on/off button, reconnected my Intel SSDPEKNW512GB and booted into that. The Samsung is showing 430 GB free of 465 GB so the install was about 35GB, which is quite a lot W10 Home x64 considering info I read about the installed size would be approx 20-25GB. Looking inside the Samsung at the installed folders etc shows all to be there but I cannot boot into it because when I tried to do so before I reconnected the Intel SSD, the installation of the W10 Home wanted to continue from about where I had pulled the plug. Anyway, it has been a worthwhile experience and when my Uruguayan friend is awake, up and about in about 1 hours time, I will relate to her that which I have done here and put it to her that I send her the W10 DVD I created and we can get on with saving that which is important to her from the HDD in her device and kick off with a fresh install of 1903 Home W10................ wondering if I can download all the updates and Service packs, AV, MSO and a few other apps and Slipstream them to the W10 Home v1903 I have :D Wouldn't that be grand considering that I don't see her having decent Internet speed for some time. Now, where can I download a bootable W10 v1909 .iso? :D ? Maybe I have a looksee at these two links www.bleepingcomputer.com www.itechtics.com There are a couple other links as well...... any chance I can get it from MS?? Cheers and have a good evening. Its cuppa time here. Ciao 4 now |
