| 1472590 | 2020-10-28 19:12:00 | The World Series Baseball is on again in America. I wonder why they call it the World Series? They never invite anyone else in the world so why do they call it the World Series? Is it because they see themselves (America) as "the world"? Is the rest of the world inconsequential? Because they don't play baseball?:annoyed: | Roscoe (6288) | ||
| 1472591 | 2020-10-28 19:58:00 | Why is our language called 'English" , when more yanks than Brits speak it . Lets call it American . In fact why call it English when it so so many foreign words . Lets call out language 'mongrel' Why do we call rugby 'football' , when it clearly isnt . It should be called Handball . Soccer/football came 1st so no way should we use that term 'world series' is only a name. Dont read anything into it . Look at the history of that name to see why & how long ago it was called that . There is a true world competition for baseball , World Baseball Classic . (from wiki) Is the rugby "Super 12" really all that super if we limit it to basically 3 countries . Super 12 should be called the "South Hemisphere 12 Teams of our Choosing but we wont let other Teams in Because of marketing TV competition" :banana Americas Cup becomes "Rich persons yacht races that has little to do with the Countries the teams are From But Started as UK vs US racing Cup" pretty catchy new name :) Sports competition names : just marketing catch phrases |

It is called "American English" as it is spoken mainly by the Americans. The rest of the English speaking world had their own versions. And, of course, English is the most widely spoken language in the world, but the Yanks have their own version. Unfortunately, most probably because of American TV shows, many people - including Kiwis - are starting to sound like the Yanks which is unfortunate as we Kiwis have own our unique version of English. |
