42379 2002-04-07 06:19:00 Hi to whom ever,
Me a newbie at this so bare with me. I am operating a HP Pavilion computer running windows ME.
I'm trying to do a scandisk check, and after a few minutes the scandisk program tells me that 'windows or some other program is writing to the hard drive. Please shut down all open programs so scandisk can finish faster' or in my case never.
I shut down all programs, closed all the programs in the system tray, all the programs in the quick launch bar, and cleaned every thing except 'My Computer, Recycle Bin,My Network Places' from the Desktop. I then Pressed ALT-CTRL-DEL and shut all from there expect 'Explorer and Systray'. And ScanDisk still does the same thing. Am I missing something here, I know I'm over 50 but hey not that bad yet.
Some avice would be apprecited.

42380 2002-04-07 06:22:00 Reboot into safe mode and run both your scandisk and defrag from there. To get into Safe Mode restart and as the computer starts to boot up, start clicking the F8 key (exact key may vary between systems but F8 is the common one), you will be offered several options, select Start in Safe Mode. Upon finishing the scandisk and defrag restart back into normal windows Guest (0)

If it still doesn't work, do it in Safemode.

42382 2002-04-07 06:41:00 you could also use the back-up floppy disc that you should've made when you 1st installed winME (or supplied with if it was pre-installed) and just put the floppy in the drive & turn the computer on. wait untill the comp is idle, then type 'scandisk' when 'a:/'is displayed

and it should just scan

42383 2002-04-07 06:45:00 Hey Merlin, the icons in the quick launch bar are just short cuts just like the desktop, they are not running, but you did close everything via CTRL-ALT-Del.

Have you tried the FREE windows update page? In explorer Click on Tools>Windows Update, click on product updates and it will tell you what you need.
