42437 2002-04-07 09:52:00 Hi,

I have just purchased a new 60GB hard drive, (with no installation software, cables, manual, etc joy of joys) and, looking around I see information about a conflict concering the bios and recognition of drives above 32 GB.

Does anyone know, whether I need to update the flash bios on my comp b4 installing the drive?

The info concerning my current bios is as follows, I just took it from the bios screen, and know nothing about updating the bios etc. Hopefully that will soon be changed. Thanks for any information that anyone can provide.

42438 2002-04-07 10:39:00 Hi

went through this drama last week trying to get an early pentium to look at a 40gig drive. the answers are like this.

Plug your drive in as normal and boot in to the bios and see what the motherboard picks it up as.
If it reads as 60gigs .your in no problem. if not you have two options.

1. upgrade your Bios. BUT this will only work if they have released a newer version that will address this issue
Most motherboard manfactures give detailed info on how to flash the bios.
Be wary of downloading a bios upgrades from unconfirmed sources because if its not the right one you may have to buy a new motherboard.

2. your only other option is to go to the hard drive manufacturer and obtain a copy of some drive overlay software. This software basically fools the Bios by telling it the drive is 32gig but it configures so that the full 60gig is available.

the 2nd option worked for me as my motherboard manufacture went belly up eons ago.

Oh and there is one more.
Buy a new Motherboard.

good luck
