42578 2002-04-08 05:35:00 We have two machines running Win2k that every now & then comes to a grinding halt when the 'System' process decides to take over the machine utililising most of the CPU time.
Task Manager normally identifies this process as PID 8 and has a memory usage of 212k.
A reboot sometimes fixes the problem but not always.
Could you please advise what this process is and what may be causing it to go into overload?

42579 2002-04-09 10:42:00 Hi Peter, have you checked the MS knowledge base site? there are a large number of known conditions that cause very high cpu usage including trying to print to a parallel port connected printer.

Go to support.microsoft.com

select in the top left corner drop down 'windows 2000' and enter some keywords in the box below. something like 'system process hogs cpu time'(without the quotes) have a look at what is found and see if anything looks familiar. if not, use some different key words and repeat.
