| 42946 | 2002-04-10 02:29:00 | I know that everyone has a problem with this, but what can you do SAFELY when you inadvertently bring up a site and it is only obvious AFTER you have entered to look around, that it is laden with the stuff, to the point of freezing your computer, or in the case of that MONKEY, keeps going in a loop? I had to close by turning the computer off. Is there anything else I can do ( I think I have some form of control already). I tried to bring up a new window, but it was going nowhere fast!Am I allowed to say what other site seems to be affected? | Guest (0) | ||
| 42947 | 2002-04-10 03:31:00 | Hi Eliza That's not spam, that's pop-ups, pop-unders and other nuisance code. The solutions are: 1) Avoidance: Stay away from suspect sites if you can. 2) You can close the windows faster than they can pop-up by holding down the Alt key and pressing F4 as many times as is necessary to close the offending windows, including the one that started it. 3) You can get free program downloads that help stifle this sort of behaviour. 4) Some firewall programs also allow you to block unwanted code e.g. Zone Alarm. 5) There are programs that will clear your cookies folder and other information repositories within your computer that tell such sites when you return and tend to make the problem worse. Now, I haven't time to pull out the program names right now but I'm sure that some of our resident experts who roam freely and fearlessly around the Net will soon post some reliable programs for you to use. Just remember options 1 & 2, which require no downloads and have served me very well, apart from Zone Alarm I've not yet needed anything else. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

I have included a couple of google links for popup killers and adfilters. <www.google.com <www.google.com Remove the <> at each end of the links. |

Do a search on this site (go to Refine your search at the top of the Press F1 homepage, and make sure you choose the 'Newest posts first' for relevance) for popup killers or popup windows and you'll get some suggestions on programs that help. |
