42939 2002-04-10 00:01:00 Hi all, basically I think I'm just after confirmation of my own suspicions. I have an old system, running Win98. 133 MHz, 2 GB hard drive, 64MB, etc etc Yep, I know..pretty old.
I currently need more space and picked up a 10GB Seagate drive. I've upgraded my BIOS etc to handle to later hardware, and have managed to install it but it keeps running into probs. How unusual!
I'm not sure whether the hard drive is corrupted, but I have decided that I need to upgrade my motherboard, CPU before trying to get more space for now.
Is it possible to get a harddrive (uninstalled) diagnosed as sick and can it be fixed? it makes a horrible rythymic grinding noise when it's installed?
May sound silly but confirmation of my thoughts would be awesome.

42940 2002-04-10 00:18:00 You didn't say, but is the new hard drive new or second hand? Guest (0)
42941 2002-04-10 00:32:00 sorry, it's a relatively new drive, but i got it secondhand. Guest (0)
42942 2002-04-10 09:52:00 Is that sound like that of someone dragging their fingernails down a blackboard, or of metal on metal sort of sound? if so..... i think the drive is good as a paper weight. Guest (0)
42943 2002-04-10 10:25:00 I had a HD like that a couple of years ago, it was something real small like a 4.3 or something, I used it as a portable storage device, and it grinded its way through life for well over a year before i got rid of it. It worked perfectly, although i never dared to put anything to important on it. There is hope, but as i say, i wouldn't use a noisy HD for anything you really would not want to lose. Guest (0)
