42905 2002-04-09 22:06:00 Someone out there must have a clue? I omitted to say in my first post a couple of days ago that I am running Win 98 SE. I need the audio for running Dragon Naturally Speaking.
Earlier post reads: I have lost my audio and attempts to reinstall the driver have been unsuccessful. When I go through the process of installing hardware, the sound card is found and identified as 'PCI Multimedia Audio Device' but which ever way I try, the driver is not found. I tried the Microsoft Windows update site and although it correctly identified the sound card as a plug and play device, it does not seem to have produced a correct driver. In device manager/system/other devices/general, the properties for PCIMAD shows 'the drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)'.Under the drivers tab it says; 'No drivers have been loaded for the this device and none are needed'. Click update driver whilst online and it collects information from Win update, then reports that no driver was found. Grrrrr! With older computers I?ve always kept a copy of drivers on a floppy or CD, but this one does not appear to have come with a suitable driver and the advice I have from the manufacturer is to try the Windows update site. Well I did that to no avail. Suggestions much appreciated.

42907 2002-04-10 01:52:00 Hi Sam.

I wonder if this might help you.

I had a sound card problem too and it was resolved by entering the system in safe mode. Then go to System/Device manager. Locate the sound card entry and delete it!

Back out and close the system down. When you restart, plug and play should then find the sound card for you. It maybe necessary to reinstall the driver for the sound card if not found by plug and play.

This worked for me, hope it does for you.

Bryan.

42908 2002-04-10 04:10:00 Jamie,
According to the OEM, the sound card details are: 32 bit PCI ESS Solo 1.
They just tell me to do what I have been doing all along and it don't help.
I'm about to try the latest suggestion by Bryan. I'll let him and you know here of it clicks. Many thanks to both.

42909 2002-04-10 04:46:00 Bryan. Worked as you suggested and when I rebooted plug and play found the audio card, but no driver. There does seem to be a suitable driver in the library on the machine.
I had tried this before, but without going through the safe mode process.
Will no search on the web to see if I can find a driver for the solo 1. I'll report how it goes.
