42790 2002-04-09 05:58:00 hi, i've heard people talking saying that you have to register xp to use it. Is this true? i havent registered i just entered a cd key and it works.

And another question while im at it sometime when i play a game eg half life when returning to windows after exiting the game my screen is brighter than what it was before. i have looked at the setting on the display but they are the same as before i played, i cant work it out i have to restart for the monitor to go back to normal.

an answer to either of these would be great

42791 2002-04-09 06:14:00 If you aren't getting reminders from XP, that it has to be activated, I would be suspicious of the origions of your copy...

Many games allow you to adjust the contrast and brilliance from the game console. These changes are achieved by adjusting registers in your video card; these registers are not being restored when you exit your game and so you have a brighter display. You could back off the brightness / contrast boost in your game setup, but then you would have to compensate by cranking up your monitor for the duration of the game.

42792 2002-04-09 06:34:00 XP Home requires you to register at some point, however XP Pro (aka Corp) does not require you to register. Theyd like you to, but IMHO thats them being nosey :-p Guest (0)
42793 2002-04-09 07:12:00 The Corporate edition does not need activating, the Professional and Home ones do.

42794 2002-04-09 11:42:00 Windows XP (Pro or Home) does not need to be registered. Both, however, need to be activated. If you have a corporate edition then this process is built into the CD that you have. All versions require a CD - key to be entered when instaling.

Registration is something MS would like you to do while Activation (be it manually or through a Corporate CD) is required.
