43148 2002-04-10 22:12:00 Hi
I am considering buying a Digital Camera around the 2 to 3 megapixels and was wondering what horror stories there are. In particular I am concerned about battery life.

43149 2002-04-11 03:35:00 There are a number of good review sites around, so once you have a few models in mind, checkout the likes of <www.dpreview.com> and <www.steves-digicams.com>

Battery life is improving with the newer models - I would always go for a camera that uses 'standard' (AA) types - the NiMH AAs are now so cheap, you can carry a couple of spare sets with you.

It is worth checking out the performance of the rear LCD in bright light - most cameras, it is very hard to see the picture; so you definitely need an optical viewfinder as well.

LCD in the viewfinder models are starting to become more affordable - this overcomes the problem of the 'inaccurate' optical viewfinder, and the 'washed out' rear LCD viewfinders.

Flash units tend to be underpowered - if you want to use the camera for flash photography, get one with an external flash socket.

Most camers offer USB connectivity to a PC - check whether the camera will power itself from the USB when connected; otherwise the battery drain tends to be high.

Hope that helps somewhat.

43150 2002-04-11 19:23:00 Fuji S1 sucks batteries big time, but unless you got $10k spare that won't be a problem.

2mega is enough, 3 is way plenty.

Make sure you have a proper viewfinder, mine just has a screen and it is a hassle in sunlight.

They are never very good at action shots, they're all the same on that one.

Big zoom is important to me, and I am not much bothered about whether it fits the handbag or not.

They rock, though.

robo.
