43082 2002-04-10 09:23:00 The latest is pop-up downloads:

'...when visiting a site a person may receive a pop-up box that appears as a security warning with the message: 'Do you accept this download?' If the consumer clicks 'Yes,' an application is automatically installed. '

It really is essential reading, available here:

Thanks for advice, Susan.

43084 2002-04-10 10:00:00 Well Charming!
Perhaps I will go and live in a cave somewhere 'unplugged' as it were.
I hardly bother with the TV any more, and only listen to the radio on the road, now I get this (insert bad word(s) of your choice) on the net too. Sigh...

43086 2002-04-10 19:48:00 I can confirm that the damn things are already out there. I had one appear yesterday whilst I was happily doing my own thing, the sneaky thing about it was I was downloading something else at the time and very nearly clicked on the accept button as I thought it was what I was actually trying to download.
Whats the next step??....apps that automatically download and run on your system without your knowledge as part of a 'free' trial??
Its time advertisers realised that there is a limit to what we will accept and I feel that they are getting very near the edge right now.

Now that is exactly what they want you to do! Also, in that article it says:

''An unsophisticated user like my poor mother would have presumed it was something like a browser plug-in necessary to view the site and (would OK) the download,' said Noss. 'But downloading software especially for unsophisticated users can cause lots of grief and pain.''

Never mind about unsophisicated, what about the unwary? Looks like we are going to really have to keep our wits about us these days.

Let's hope there will soon be 'pop-up download killers', similar to pop-up killers.
