43043 2002-04-10 07:12:00 Hi,I hope someone can help me.

I am building a small system & have struck a problem. I can only get the computer to boot if I use an ISA video card. I am using a VA503+ motherboard & an IBM PR200 chip. I have tried an AMD 450 chip also & have tried 2 motherboards (identical) and have tried several AGP & PCI video cards & I know they work as they are all out of working systems. Same result on both boards.

Windows recognises the AGP & PCI cards and tries to install drivers for them when it boots up with the ISA card, but when I change the monitor lead over to any of the new cards 'nothing on the screen'
Both motherboards give the same result. Boots with ISA but not with AGP or PCI. It can't be the chip as it was pulled from a working system an hour ago with a PCI & Voodoo2 3D with a pass thru cable & worked perfectly.
I can't get the machine to boot with the 450 chip although it may be buggered.

Please, am I doing something wrong. AGP is enabled in the BIOS & I've tried it at 1x & 2x.

Thanks for your time.

43044 2002-04-10 07:44:00 In the BIOS there should be an option that selects which video device to look for first.

I don't have any ISA slots on my motherboard but I've got the option of allowing either PCI or AGP to be the first place to look.

Have a look through your BIOS for anything like this.

43046 2002-04-10 11:39:00 Thanks guys, tried both suggestions and no luck. Still boots from ISA but not AGP or PCI.

Is there anything on the board that should be set. It's really got me stumped, 2 boards exactly the same and the same problem on both. Could it be jumper settings? I already have one of these in another machine I built for my brother and it works flawlessly.

Cheers

43047 2002-04-10 20:57:00 Try removing your video card from device manager , shut down, remove card, plug in new card and monitor lead off that; start up.

Tell us how that goes.

43048 2002-04-10 23:23:00 Thanks guys, I have tried all of the above on both boards and still the same result. Tried numerous AGP & PCI cards, used the latest drivers from the via website specific to the board & still no joy. Would it be something to do with the AT power supply? Would it be any use trying them in an ATX case. I have each board set up in different cases at the moment which both have AT power supplies, although I have run plenty of theses boards in the past with no problems.

I'm about to throw both of them out the window.

Thanks.

43049 2002-04-11 01:25:00 Thanks guys, but I had alredy tried all of the above.

I did a bit more digging and found this.

***What hardware is Cyrix 6x86MX200-PR200-compatible?

Because the Cyrix 6x86?-PR200+ processor runs on a high-speed 75MHz system bus, the PCI bus clock rate is at 37.5MHz. As a result, you may have difficulties installing some older PCI VGA, LAN and SCSI cards into your Cyrix 6x86?-PR200+ system. Other components such as ISA add-in cards and EIDE devices such as CD-ROM Drives and Hard Disk Drives are not affected.***

This is exactly the chip I am trying to run, so I will try and find another chip & try that. Anyone got one for sale? Preferably a 400-550 Socket 7.

Thanks.
